Learning a language

So our kids do Spanish in school. Not sure what has happened to French, but not complaining.

And I need to learn Spanish (so my very old French GCSE is going to be clearly useless) but visiting Europe this summer it was clear how well I was taught French because whilst as rusty as Mater from Cars, I thought, yep I could get by, if I spent a couple of months here it would come back.

I know Duolingo etc, but can any recommend an online course (this is for me by the way, it's likely I will need to take a Spanish exam in a couple of years) that teaches "like school" full on grammar, sentence structure, the works. I understand a cost would be involved.

Can I do a "foundation" then GCSE Spanish online myself? Or is that too ambitious? Do I need an actual tutor?

Basically if anyone has done something similar would appreciate to hear any feedback, recommendations, time commitments, if you have used IRL afterwards.

Have you tried online tutor Italki. ?They have tutors from all over the world and you can have trial lessons with tutors

Get your own copies of the kids' textbooks and teacher's handbook and do DuoLingo?
Spanish isn't hugely different from French - easier I think (fewer irregularities) so you'll probably pick it up quite quickly.

The kids so so much via online whiteboards, interactive teaching. They don't bring home textbooks. And do homework online. Or at school in library.

Spanish is easier, yippee!

I might get a starter grammar book and learn the common verbs to start with.

I just want the basic blocks drummed in. If that makes sense.

Never heard of this. But will definitely take a look. Perhaps we can have a family tutorial I am sure the kids would be overjoyed about that!

Have a look at International House London, I’m doing a weekly online Italian class with them & they’re brilliant. There’s a test you can do to see what level to start at.

@EmpressaurusOfCats regarding Spanish, the beginning! Like Puss in Boots standard! But thanks that sounds good.

There are some Spanish courses on FutureLearn: www.futurelearn.com/subjects/language-courses/spanish and more on Coursera: www.coursera.org/search?query=spanish

mandymion · 08/09/2023 18:04

this audio course is free and I heard really good things about it on Reddit:
https://www.languagetransfer.org/complete-spanish
The guy does lots of different courses and offers them all free of charge.
