Best gluten-free pasta?

Saturdaygirl01 · 08/09/2023 16:03

I bought some gluten-free pasta from the Co-op and I thought it tasted really nice but dc didn’t like it and they need to avoid normal pasta (IBS.) I tried the Tesco gluten-free penne and nobody liked that.

Can anyone recommend a decent gluten-free pasta that would be good in a tuna pasta bake? Thanks

My very fussy DD likes Sainsbury's own brand

VeloVixen · 08/09/2023 16:05

My sil says Asda. Dd reckons they’re all as bad as each other 🤷‍♀️

Poundfoolishpennywise · 08/09/2023 16:10

I’ve tried them all and M&S is vastly superior, especially the spaghetti and penne. I can eat gluten (cook for my gluten intolerant DC) but am quite happy to eat gluten free pasta from M&S as I can barely detect a difference in taste!

Just to add that in my opinion Sainsburys is the worst, the fusilli goes all soft and tasteless and that’s not from overcooking as I follow the cooking instructions to the letter. The M&S equivalent has a much better and firmer texture.

I've needed gf pasta for years. My experience is that the supermarket ones are all much of a muchness, and I haven't found any other make that's any better. If someone comes on the thread with a particularly good one I shall be all ears.

I like the asda one. Fed it to whole family yesterday. They said they wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't told them. It's horrible cold though, so not for pasta salad. Shame as I liked to do extra for that reason.

The Barilla brand is the best I’ve found. But no it won’t taste anywhere as good as traditional pasta.

AgnesX · 08/09/2023 16:17

Try ZenB, if you look online there'll probably be a 40% off offer for new customers. Napolina have caught up are are doing one and Lidl are also stocking one I think. Costco were doing one but I can't remember the brand. It wasn't a permanent item though.

The brands that use lentil and other pulses tend not to fall apart too quickly but other than that the tastes are much the same IMO

minipie · 08/09/2023 16:22

Barilla seconded. I like it almost as much as normal pasta.

SoIinvictus · 08/09/2023 16:25

Rummo and Garofalo (you can get both on Amazon) are two of the best supermarket brand premium pastas in Italy, and cost a lot more than the cheaper brands, so I'd imagine their gluten free is probably superior as well. Certainly their ordinary is worlds apart from cheaper brands.

Failing that, De Cecco or Barilla are middle of the road ranges so might be worth a punt.

stripes1 · 08/09/2023 16:28

I second Garofalo. You can get it from Ocado. More expensive but you can tell the difference between that and the cheapy Tesco ones. Waitrose fusilli worth a try too.

Pleasenowthatsenough · 08/09/2023 16:33

Sainsbury’s do green pea fusilli (gf safe) and red lentil pasta, although I can’t for some reason bring up the details online to see if it’s made in a gluten free factory.

Yarnysaurus · 08/09/2023 16:39

Garofalo or Barilla.

Napolina for spaghetti.

Saturdaygirl01 · 08/09/2023 16:40

Lots of suggestions. That’s great thanks!

Another vote for Garafalo, although I can only speak for the linguini. It was so good I haven't bothered to try the other pasta shapes.
I've tried various brands over the past 20 years and this is definitely the best IMHO.

Second this - all family members are happy with it rather than grumbling - I refuse to cook two different types of pasta 😅

Inkpotlover · 08/09/2023 16:52

There is no such thing. It all tastes like corrugated card. I have NCGS and hate not being able to eat real pasta.

Floralnomad · 08/09/2023 16:54

We use the Tesco one , my daughter really disliked Barilla and the Zenb we all disliked .

Enderunicorn · 08/09/2023 16:57

I eat the tesco red lentil pasta, it's fine as long as you don't overcook.

BrandNewBicep · 08/09/2023 17:27

When people say it doesn't taste the same - I have never found regular pasta to taste of anything. Its just a vehicle for a tasty sauce.

AllLopsided · 08/09/2023 18:01

Barilla coquillettes (not sure if they have a different name in the U.K. - they are a mini-macaroni shape).

GF pasta is never going to have the same texture as the normal stuff Sad

Feijoajam · 19/04/2024 13:03

Very late to this thread, but Waitrose brown rice pasta is the best I've tried and quite reasonable. Doesn't taste weird or unpleasant, has a satisfying bite, and doesn't disintegrate if you take your eye off it. In fact, best to ignore the cooking instructions as it needs a lot longer!🙂

minipie · 19/04/2024 13:08

Barilla seems to depend on the shape weirdly - their GF spaghetti is excellent but the fusilli wasn’t nearly as good IMHO
