Arriving into Derby early am, passing through on a long journey so have 24 hours to fill. I've found a Premier Inn so accom is sorted, but I've never been to the city or know anything about it. Picked because of its location not anything else.

Any recs of nice places to eat, walk around etc? Me and dh, no kids. We like food, maybe some independent shops rather than chain, museums, parks.

Darley Park is nice for a stroll. Bit of a walk out of the centre.
Or Kedleston Hall?
There are plenty of shops there but I've not been for years so it'll all have changed.

Are you planning to stay in walking distance?

If so, the museum of making and art gallery, a look around the cathedral and Sadler gate (shopping, bars and food) then a walk down the derwent to darley park would be nice. If you head up the hill 8n the park you will see the hydrangea collection which is really pretty- more varieties than you'd think!) Over the river to darley abbey mills for lunch at Darley's if you're feeling a bit extravagant, or Lorentes for tapas (really nice position by the river).

If you feel like slightly further afield by car, or bus, train too I think, Duffield is quite lovely with a walk from the Bridge Inn up to the Hollybush pub (not a massive walk but you get to see Derbyshire looking pretty which Derby centre doesn't always).

Worth checking Quad for interesting films and events.

Naala's do great south indian food and is walkable from the centre (cash only mind).

I would go to the velodrome and do their track cycling course, which is excellent - but only works if you like cycling!

the river gardens are an easy walk. The cathedral quarter is good for a wander and see the independent shops.

Get some lunch from Birds. Some bread, potted beef and then one of their cakes for pudding. My personal favourites are the lemon curd tarts.

My Grandpa designed St Alkmund’s church on the ring road. Personally I think it’s a beautiful mid century building worth taking a look at.

Markeaton Park is lovely with the kiddies. Paddling pool, boating lake etc, crazy golf, adventure playground. Darley Park is nice for a walk too.

Or there's Elvaston Castle, Kedleston Hall. Sudbury children's museum a bit further out but a great national trust place!

Sadler Gate is lovely for independent shops and the Cathedral Quarter is really nice! The Museum of Making in the Silk Mill nearby there is great too.

Eating wise, in the evening there are some great Indian Restaurants if that's your kind of thing!

Morley Hayes is really nice for a meal. Couple of restaurants there, nice outdoor space!

Otherwise, you could head out to some villages. Joiners Arms at Quarndon is fab!
