Having it out tomorrow. Utterly terrified. Anyone know how long before you can eat?

At least you won't top that* not sewing.

The numbness isn't too bad. Wears off after an hour or so and you can still move your face!

QuestionableMouse · 08/09/2023 00:24

Get some yFood* drinks if you can - they're meal replacements but actually taste nice and fill you up!

(*other brands available though I've only tried yFood)

Thanks all, it’s really helped. Kind of. Still shitting myself. Today is the day that I’ve put off for years 😭

I put my extraction off for a couple of years. In that time I had three painful infections. I would worry about it every single day. I was petrified of having the tooth removed. It was honestly fine and over with very quickly. I couldn't believe how easy and painless it was. A few more hours and it will all be over with. You are being very brave. 💐

BishopBrennansArseHole · 08/09/2023 07:50

@BindyCeale I’m certainly not being brave, I feel like a little child again 😆

The same thing has happened to me, tooth hasn’t bothered me for years even though it wasn’t in great shape, but I’ve had 3 infections in a row and obviously antibiotics are not good to be taking so often.

😭

But thank you, I really do appreciate all the kind words here. Which is why I keep coming back, I really need the encouragement or I won’t step into the dentist’s office!

If you're getting infections, you're going to feel so much better with it gone! I did, and have - there was an abscess sack around the roots of my bottom tooth that would have just kept refilling.

Try to look at it as a few hours out of your day and life that's going to really benefit you in the long run! It also helped me to prepare - soft food in, ice packs frozen, that sort of thing.

Tell your dentist that you're nervous, they can help!

Laneymoo · 08/09/2023 08:03

Hi OP, I'm a dental nurse who used to work in oral surgery until last year. You will honestly be absolutely fine. Eat and drink well before you go. Close your eyes and pop in some headphones, keep the music low so you can still hear what the dentist says. Tell the dentist if you want to know what's happening or not, whatever you're comfortable with. They will check you are fully numb before they start but you will still feel pressure and pushing but you shouldn't feel any sharp pain. Try your best not to hold your breath, nice slow breaths. Follow all the instructions, no drinking or smoking and definitely no straws! There may be some blood on your pillow tomorrow morning, all normal. Easy, soft food like mashed potatoes, warm (not hot) soup. Local anaesthetic can last for four hours so take care during that time. All the best, you will wonder after what you were ever worrying about! Let us know how it goes x

You are being brave. You are going and you've not cancelled. That's brave.

Best of luck.

Whyhellodaffodil · 08/09/2023 08:14

Good luck op - honestly you’ll be absolutely fine and it’ll be so worth it not to have to worry about that tooth anymore. You can do it 😊

MontyCCU · 08/09/2023 08:31

Given your username 😉, 'a go on, go on, go on Bishop.'

MontyCCU · 08/09/2023 08:32

As long as the dentist isn't Father Dougal, you'll be okay.

Dentist or hospital?

My friend had 4 out in hospital, he ate ace cream, and then more ice cream. He also used up my first aid supply of cold packs.

BishopBrennansArseHole · 08/09/2023 09:33

@MontyCCU 😆 I definitely need Mrs Doyle by my side today!

It’s at my regular dentist, not the hospital. I don’t know if that makes me more nervous or not!

I’m thinking about eating something before I go but my stomach is churning, I don’t think I’ll manage anything. **

Laneymoo · 08/09/2023 09:42

If it's at your regular dentist then it's most likely going to be straightforward enough since you haven't been referred onto a specialist. Try have even a slice of toast.

BishopBrennansArseHole · 08/09/2023 10:26

@Laneymoo thanks, that’s what I’m trying to tell myself!

God I’m shaking. I don’t ever remember being this anxious!

Ask for someone to hold your hand.

I've had an ordinary tooth out at the dentist, it was basically a twist and a pull. It was quicker than a filling.

BindyCeale · 08/09/2023 11:49

Hopefully you are all done now.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 08/09/2023 11:57

Not a wisdom tooth, but I had a tooth out this year. Painkillers, soup, and taking it easy for a few days. I stayed off hard/crunchy foods for a couple of weeks, but just judged it by how sore my mouth was feeling really.

Honestly, the worst bits were the anaesthetic injection and then getting home as it was a bus replacement service for the train I'd usually get so a lot of hanging around. The actual removal was fine.

BishopBrennansArseHole · 08/09/2023 13:01

Everyone…. I DID IT!! It’s done! It sounds ridiculous but I’m so proud of myself, I very nearly cancelled. I was literally shaking. Badly.

It was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. Even the injections didn’t hurt. Still waiting for the local to wear off (I had to wait until 12 to have it done, they were running late).

Still bleeding quite a lot though which I’m now worrying about 🫤

Thank you all so much for your words of encouragement, it really did help 💐

BindyCeale · 08/09/2023 13:03

I knew you could do it. Well done.

AffIt · 08/09/2023 13:19

Well done! You'll feel so much better now.

Take some pain relief now (don't wait for the local to wear off!) and keep yourself on a schedule, remembering that you can alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol.

Wrap yourself up in a duvet, crack out Netflix / Disney+ etc, get yourself a nice yoghurt and chill out for the rest of the day.

BishopBrennansArseHole · 08/09/2023 13:30

Thank you both 😊

Yes I think I’ll take some ibuprofen now… but worried about taking them with a drink though, still quite a bit of bleeding. Anyone know when that supposed to stop?

Did they pack the sites with gauze etc? I don't think mine bled much. I was cycling ibuprofen and paracetamol.

As for food, I ate mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs (mushed against the roof of my mouth with my tongue) for ages.

MontyCCU · 08/09/2023 13:37

Well done OP!!!

You can always phone the surgery for advice about the bleeding.
