Reasonable new driver insurance

Mumof118 · 07/09/2023 00:13

DS is about to take his test and we are seeing that new driver car insurance is likely to cost in the region of £2500!!!!

Can anyone recommend a more reasonable insurance company.

He’s trying to insure an i20, not a Ferrari. Ouch!

TIA

He just has to put the hours in trawling through the comparison sites.

So many things influence insurance, and different companies put more emphasis on different things.

Having older / more experienced named drivers seem to help.
For a lot of people a black box helps (though they have their issues).
Leaving it for a few months rather than applying straight after his test apparently helps.

Thank you for the advice! I’ll let him know.

Is it for his own vehicle or add to another?

Own vehicle then adding experienced drivers helps

If it's say your vehicle then something like marmalade, where they have their own separate policy, can help

Move house.

OK, not very practical, but location is a huge factor. Car insurance has been whacked up for everyone lately.

As far as what DS reasonably can do. If he's looking for work, don't get car insurance until after getting the job; unemployed is just about the highest risk. If he's a student or otherwise economically inactive, don't say "unemployed".

Churchill DriveSure was the best for DD, I also added myself as an additional driver. It was also a little cheaper as she was 18 when she passed her test compared to still being 17 (still £1800 mind!)

Ds just passed his test and we have had the same quotes. Currently looking for a car, and struggling to find a decent one in our price range.

Marmalade operate a pay as you go system with a black box for cars under 20 years old. This has proved useful for a uni student who only drives when home for the holidays.

He may have to agree to have a black box fitted.

Doing things like adding experienced drivers to your policy helps too.
