job ideas

DD has just graduated from a top university with a first in a humanities subject. She wants a job that:

Uses her brain
Is people facing
Is not a desk job
Involves moving about/being outside

Any ideas?

Forgot to add, she is super-fit, but not very strong.

Something to do with overseeing sports or events management

Great result - but did she not take advantage of the university careers service and opportunities to apply to grad schemes during her final year?

It seems a bit odd that her mother should be asking for ideas on her behalf at this late stage.

Does she have a strong CV?

Any1Else · 07/09/2023 08:57

Of course it may be that she felt a fundamental disinclination towards those ‘traditional’ routes? That would be important to know.

diian · 07/09/2023 21:36

She did take advantage of the careers service @Any1Else , but they wanted to push her towards investment banking, consultancy, finance and law. I am sure you can probably guess the university from those 4 routes. DD applied to join the Royal Navy as an officer but got knocked back yesterday on medical grounds .

So an evening was spent thinking about other 'active, people facing, using your brain' careers, looking at masters in Sports management, politics and international development, or Broadcast journalism. To be honest, she is completely lost what to do career-wise and so I was just looking to see if fellow mumsnetters had sage advice or career ideas that she could research.

She has a very strong CV and was offered a job in procurement in the summer. However, when it was only 1 day in the office and 4 days WFH she could not face online working from her bedroom with no social interaction, so turned it down hoping the Navy would work out.

She should talk to the careers service. Get an appointment with an adviser and be clear she isn’t interested in investment banking etc. it may help to see if they have any of those career quiz type things first as it may at least throw up some options to discuss. Most university career services will help recent graduates and since Covid many have virtual options as well as in person.

Railway job/graduate scheme. If near London take a look at the TfL graduate schemes, or can start from scratch on stations and get promoted quickly to station supervisor, signaller etc. really good perks and pensions in this sector.

diian · 07/09/2023 21:48

@RAACwoes Thank you. I will get her to look at Tfl grad schemes.

The general management scheme would be good for someone who does not want to work solely behind a desk. She could end up managing a busy Zone 1 station, or a train crew depot.

General Management Graduate

Lead the change for London and gain experience across a range of different projects.
