Night sweats and alcohol

I've been having terrible Night sweats for 18 months. I'm 36 and had all kinds of bloods done, including hormones, even had a Lymes disease test. All results bring nothing back. I sweat every night!!

I stopped the pill for 6 months and still sweat!

I've tried to stop eating and drinking anything hot before bed, doesn't work.

Bought new mattress and bedding and cooling pyjamas. Hasn't worked! Use a fan at night, doesn't work.

One pattern I've noticed is that when I drink alcohol I don't sweat at night! I don't drink much, not even once a month but I'm curious if anyone has any insight? Or advice? Thanks

Yes, alcohol made me sweat at night too, so I gave it up.

Alcohol is a diuretic so perhaps you are slightly dehydrated when you go to bed when you've been drinking. Just guessing.

I get alcohol sweats too. As I moved into my 40's I realised my body absolutely cannot tolerate alcohol. It literally feels like poison the next day. Am not teetotal but have massively cut back - can go months without having a drink now. I do feel better for it.

I used to work for a counselling service for drinkers, it's not unusual at all, op.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 07/09/2023 07:31

That's very normal when you've been drinking.

The OP is saying she DOESN'T sweat at night, not that she does.

Saverage · 07/09/2023 07:32

With alcohol I mean.

Try folding the duvet back at the foot end so that your feet can see out. It's a bit harder to go to sleep knowing that your feet are vulnerable to the night-monsters without the protection of the big tough duvet, but it helps with night sweats for some.

Have you tried cutting out sugar in the evening? So no pudding, chocolate, biscuits, sweet milky drinks?

manontroppo · 07/09/2023 07:40

Same here - horrific night sweats that are hormonal. Usually the few days leading up to and during my period, complete change the bedding night sweats, except when I had a few drinks!

A wool duvet helps massively and I need very light duvets. At the moment I am just using a sheet, and even in winter it’s rare that I use more than a 4 tog. You really need a cool a bedroom as possible.

Argh. How did we all miss that?!

Sorry op. The alcohol thing doesn't apply in my posts, but the duvet folding might!

HeadNorth · 07/09/2023 07:49

I am just remembering a recent post from a teacher about students not reading the exam question Grin

Sorry OP, as most posters have said, alcohol is usually associated with sweatier nights. Maybe in your case it is a mild relaxant so you sleep through the night?

Theamofm · 08/09/2023 07:08

Thanks everyone for your answers. I'm going to try a flat sheet instead of an actual duvet to see if that makes a difference. I'm at a stage where I just don't think the docs are interested now so I've got to get to the bottom of it myself. I'm going out Saturday so if I don't sweat after drinking then maybe it is a relaxant and maybe I'm having nightmares and don't realise? IDK thanks anyway
