How far do you go for an outing with the dc?

We have 5 dc at 3 different schools so inset days are special days where we can go out with 1 or 2 dc to the trampoline park or similar and get a slushie without spending a fortune or have half the children moaning that they didn't want to go or that they hate the national trust etc. It's 12 year old ds3's turn tomorrow so we booked his choice of venue and I'm looking forward to it. It's one of those ninja warrior inflatable things about an hours drive away and he will love it.

Mil asked if she could come round tomorrow and dh said fine and I said no, we're busy and dh and I have that conversation that starts with dh asking where we're going and me telling dh that this is what happens when he says fine and ok to me when I'm talking and he's not listening.

Anyway, MIL has just been going on and on about how it's ridiculous we are going that far, we should be doing things close to home, we are always going out places etc etc. We are rural so if we want to go anywhere other than the 4 places we always go to then we need to travel at least 30 minutes. We don't go on holiday and I haven't been more than 10 minutes away from my house in the last month due to various things so quite frankly I feel like I deserve a trip out. Can I just check that I'm not being unreasonable.

My general limit is 2 hours (public transport). As the DC are getting older and easier to occupy on long train trips, I will consider things further away if they're amazing or we would be meeting someone else there.

Around 1 hour for "normal" things and up to 2 hours for something really special unless we combine it with an overnight stay but that got too expensive since DD needs now her own room.

Luckily DH likes to drive.

For inset day outings we often went a bit further to somewhere normally overrun at weekends so I wouldn't be keen to have cutting it short.

My PIL live in the outskirts to a large city where it also takes apprx 1 hour to go by public transport to the city center but it seems that is different to taking the car to go drive to the zoo.

We regularly drive 75 minutes pick up dsd (adult with additional needs) then drive a further hour to somewhere she would like (she hasn't capacity to ask). Ok our situation is unusual in that we have the initial journey (only place she can be currently) but an hour is nothing for a trip, I've certainly gone further in the past when my 2 were small
