Chalk well/Westcliffe at low tide

A bit specific I know, but hopefully there's some here who can advise!

Thinking of heading to these beaches tomorrow, but it would be low tide when we get there - will it just be miles of mud?? I've heard something about tidal pools but I don't really understand what they are. Is it safe for young children to paddle?

Other option would be Broadstairs...

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius sorry I wasn't very clear - I've already checked the tides and we would get there at low tide. My question really was: is it nice at low tide? (for a 3yo DD who wants to paddle and make sandcastles etc - and her mum!)

Hello, Chalkwell has a (small) pool. It will be mud at low tide but it fills up quick so is interesting to see. Chalkwell is nicer

For young children I would go further along to Shoebury east beach.

Shoebury east is great for finding crabs 🦀 under the rocks with little people.lots of parking, toilets and a cafe

Wow you’ve got a lot of options between either Westcliff or Broadstairs! So I assume you mean you can get wherever for approx 11am tomorrow, Wednesday 6th? I have no idea what they look like at low tide, but, one of your many options would be Minnis Bay, low tide 10.50am Wednesday 6th. And that will be flat and sandy all the way out. What I’m not sure is, the seaweed situation atm. Minnis Bay can get weedy and smelly this time of year. If it’s clear though, it’s perfect.

Chalkwell is nicer than Westcliff. I live nearby and wouldn't go to the beach at Westcliff unless just walking. East beach is good for crabbing and you have big sandbanks that run out to the water.
Please just be careful if you're going to go out on the flats, the tide didn't come in in a linear way because it's the estuary, it sneaks around and behind you very very quickly. Lots of tourists get caught out. There is a really lovely walk out to mulberry harbour at Thorpe bay, but you have to follow the tide out and make sure to pay close attention to tide times so might be better once the DC are older.
