Inflammation of liver following virus?

DD(11) has had a virus all week, high temp
since last Thursday, vomiting and a rash everywhere which today is itchy. She has a pain which Dr said is a result of the virus and is a mild liver inflammation. I'm to call back if she gets worse etc. She is drinking but not eating much, hasn't thrown up since Sunday evening but has only eaten a slice of toast, a mouthful of rice, a piece of broccoli, two clementines and a handful of blueberries since then.

I've never heard of this liver thing before and am after an idea of how long it's going to take her to recover. If your DC had this, were they well and back to normal as soon as they'd got rid of the high temp? Did it knock them out for a while? Does she need to take it easy once she's better or can she go straight back to school and sports?

Avoid any drugs (paracetamol etc.) as the liver metabilises them and will trigger it all the more

We are trying to although the Dr said it was ok to give her paracetamol if her temp spikes and she's uncomfortable with it or if she gets a headache. So far she only had two half doses on Sunday.

I gave her an antihistamine this morning against the itching (Drs surgery said on Thursday I could give it for the rash). Should I try to avoid this too?

Follow your doctors advice rather than people on the internet.

I had a severe liver infection when I had glandular fever. My GP had never seen such a result on a Liver Function Test. They thought I must have Hepatitis, but came to the conclusion it was as a result of the GF. It took a couple of months to return to normal. Hope your DC is feeling better soon.

Yes @marmaladeandpeanutbutter i will call and check about the antihistamine today.

I'm more interested in hearing how it affected other children and what I need to plan for. @WilmaJean when you say a couple of months to return to normal was that pain or exhaustion or just a slight feeling of not being back to normal?

I had this after glandular fever. I had to avoid alcohol for a year . Couldn’t eat eggs. No paracetamol and carb heavy food. My liver is fine and always has been ever since.

Carlessly · 06/09/2023 06:01

Alcohol avoidance not a problem! No eggs/paracetamol/carb heavy was that doctors orders or because you couldn't face eating them? DD has always been a very minimalistic carb eater anyway.

No it was what the doctors told me. I completely stuck to it as well, it was frightening at the time but I recovered well.

I didn’t eat eggs for years because it made me anxious. I’ve never drank spirits since really either for the same reason.

Think the idea is carb heavy food stops you eating so much protein. That’s all. Jacket potatoes pasta and the like.

Mainly I wanted to say - she will be fine - I was and my liver was really quite inflamed, you could feel the heat through my skin and I had pains.

Also had this after GF. Just had to rest and no alcohol. I didn’t get any dietary advice but it was a long time ago. I recovered fine but it was a couple of months before I was 100%.
The itching was the worst bit.

Ps I was 18

I also had to not drink alcohol, but as I recall that was the only real advice regarding my liver. I was very ill from the GF for months but by the liver returning to normal I mean in Liver Function Tests. The ALT (alanine aminotransferase) score being back in normal range. That was back to normal (within a couple of months) way before I was. I wouldn't have been able to separate any symptoms of my liver issues from the GF, as that was what dominated.
