Camera for the garden to find out if we have hedgehogs

Can anyone recommend a camera I can use to video the back garden at night, to see if we have hedgehogs? There are loads available on Amazon, and I don't know where to start!

Can't recommend anything myself.

However, we have a regular hedgehog visitor. We know he was frequenting a neighbours garden, but the last week or so he's regularly in our garden - I notice him 9-10pm. Alongside that, he's leaving his droppings, very hard brown/black about 1" long. Also, we have a couple of spots in the garden that have been dug out under fences, so I suspect those are his access points. I'd look to see if you have the above evidence, before investing in a camera.

We bought a couple of blink cameras in the Black Friday sale which have worked really well.

The only issue we found was that in a short term rental we were in with a large garden, the Wi-Fi signal was not strong enough. All solved now as our new house has a small garden so no further issues!

We use the wireless eufy cameras, they are great - but they won't pick up a creature as small as a hedgehog from a distance. So we have one mounted on a tree stump pointing along a hedge line / wall for close ups of birds, occasionally a hedgehog etc and then one mounted on a gutter for a wider garden view to capture our visiting foxes and badgers.

If you put a shallow dish of water in front of a camera you will likely attract the creatures who are hanging around in your garden 🙂

I've seen a hedgehog about once a year, I think they are just passing due to the gang of badgers who are there every night. Not sure they tend to live together (I think badgers eat them if they are really hungry!!) 😫

Tapo cameras have been great for us - cheap but really good actually. Used them for all sorts including hedgehog watch

I use Tapo too, mine is triggered by the hedgehog when he enters into the zone I have set.

I have used various makes and none last more than two years except my first. Not seen that make in a while. It also depends on budget as I refuse to pay over £60.

I've had Vanguard, another V, Tougard and GardenPro but they are all Chinese made, quick production types imo, not made to last.

If you really want a decent but expensive model have a look on the RSPB website or Wildlife Feed websites such as Ark Wildlife UK or CJ Wildlife (there are others but I have bought wildlife housing/food from those three). Browning trail cameras are supposed to be good but cost hundreds!

Look for angle and distance your camera gives as some have very narrow capture and others have 120 degrees which I find awesome.

This is all so useful, thank you all! I shall be looking for poo pellets as well as suitable cameras 😁

These aren’t pellets like rabbit poo for example, they are actually turds, up to 3 inches long but often smaller.

@ArtG good to know 😁
