Visiting Alnwick/Rothbury/Wooler, what to see

Going away for a few days in Northumberland and wondered if there was anything we should see that I haven't thought of. We've only two days. Things went thought of so far:

Alnwick castle/gardens
Holy island
Bamburgh (sp?) castle
Bookshop in Alnwick

No children, just us middle aged couple 😂

Cocklawburn beach
Heatherslaw light railway
Ford and Etal
Bridge street in Berwick has some nice eateries and boutiques.
Farne island / sea houses
Berwick boat trips - often see dolphins
Berwick museum and art gallery if you like Lowry
Flossed field if you like history - there was a phone box visitor centre not sure if it's still there?
Ingram valley in the cheviots
Alnmouth beach

If you like your fish and chips, Coull's in Berwick on Tweed is a must.

Flumpaphone · 05/09/2023 07:48

Ad Gefrin Anglo Saxon palace in Wooler
Cragside if you are over Rothbury way
Craster - the Jolly Fisherman is lovely for a meal and the Craster to Dunstanburgh castle walk is spectacular

If you sit on the hill above the priory on Lindisfarne and look South you can see 3 castles - I doubt there is any where else in the country you can do that ( and see seals playing about in the bay)

Cragside NT property. We all really enjoyed it.

Jennalong · 05/09/2023 07:59

If you have a National Trust card , there are a few properties in the area , they are all worth a visit.

If you're into seafood the Potted Lobster in Bamburgh is lovely although not cheap.

museumum · 05/09/2023 20:47

Cragside. Without a doubt my favourite NT property & garden.

Sunshineclouds11 · 05/09/2023 20:50

Bambrugh
Seahouses

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/09/2023 20:50

The walk to Dunstanbrough Castle from the NT carpark at Craster.

Alnmouth is my favourite, it's got an amazing beach, some lovely little streets to walk round and cafes etc.

Holy Island is a lovely day out.

I lost my pencil in Berwick last week...see if you can find it please

Was isn't a special pencil?

Definitely Ad Gefrin, which is one of the newest museums in the country and beautifully designed. Farne Islands boat tours from Seahouses - dolphins, seals, puffins, fabulous trip. Ford and Etal model villages, simply beautiful. Lindisfarne is magical, with really nice interpretation at the Priory, the NT property there is really well curated and the pub (Crown and Anchor) is fabulous - great selection of whisky.

mamawood · 05/09/2023 20:55

Craster if you like seafood! Some lovely places to eat Craster crab or kippers. The Jolly fisherman is a lovely pub with a great seafood platter. The joiners arms is also nice and dog friendly Smile

Crag side is amazing

I live in the area and we used to keep our bees at Cragside. They fed exclusively on the rhododendrons there and the honey was spectacular.

Anyway, all good suggestions OP. Hope you enjoy your visit to our beautiful region.

Thank you everyone. We're back now. We visited Alnwick castle, Bamburgh castle and Ad Gefrin. Loved the area, absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately we ran out of time so we'll definitely go back again.

Just diving in here @alloalloo , we are heading down to stay in Bamburgh for a week during the October holidays.
Planning a boat trip and Cragside, but is there anywhere you'd recommend to eat? Trip advisor reviews are pretty dire in the area!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/09/2023 17:54

Yan's in Alnwick is a great Chinese restaurant

fireplacetiles · 24/09/2023 19:26

Potted Lobster in Bamburgh
Whittling House in Alnmouth ( same owners)
Fish shack in Amble
Dirty Bottles in Alnwick
Market Tavern in Alnwick
All great places to eat

PlasticOrchid · 24/09/2023 19:50

Follow this guy and see where he is each day. https://www.facebook.com/CreelandReel The scallops.... the lobster roll...!!! He's often in the dunes car park at Bamburgh.

PlasticOrchid · 24/09/2023 19:52

Definitely the Fish Shack at Amble - I actually preferred it to The Potted Lobster.
