I think so.
It's pointless because nobody else can see that your post got lots of "thanks" and actually, so far, it looks like people who gets thanks can't see it either.

Can you just hit the "thanks" button for this post, so that I can see if I get a notification? TIA.

Yes. It's pointless.

I often think of a (hopefully) helpful reply and then see that many others have responded the same way, so I would think a like button there would be good, but the OP would surely need to see it too, hence it would have to be public? 🤔 As it is I just don't reply, as it would be repeating previous posts, so less input... 🤨

does it actually mean like?
i have had a couple of thanks and i go back see what i have written and assume it is being used like a like button

you can check your notifications and see that someone has given you a thanks, and you can check your post that you got a thanks for

I like that the button is there, but I hate the fact that every time someone presses it I get the "notification" highlight in the top right and I have to interrupt my mn browsing of other threads to find out whether it's someone actually engaging with/replying to/quoting my post or just another thanks. If I write a good post that a dozen people give thanks to it's disruptive. I would like the option to just have a daily roundup of how much thanks you have received rather than an immediate notification every time.

i dont bother looking at my notifications very often

Only you can see if anyone has thanked you. You see a little 1 or 2 or whatever, just above the ‘thanks’ button.
