If you could dress any way you wanted?

And I mean anyway whatsoever, what would it be?

In winter, I'd drift around in gold trimmed velvet dresses.

I'd have heavy weave/light weave silk in various pastel shades in warmer weather. Dresses to be bias cut or empire line.

For doing practical stuff, I'd have properly tailored linen or wool trousers with pockets and braces, topped with crisp white shirts and lace up leather boots.

However I live in UK 2023 so it's the jeans or leggings uniform. Humpf.

I just want to look like Claudia Winkleman and have Helena Bonham Carter’s wardrobe. Is that too much to ask?

Oh if anybody made a film of my life, I'd want Helena Bonham Carter in the lead role

I'd wear ankle length dresses in velvet and silk and fur

The ankle length dresses are not practical in real life and look crazy on my 6ft frame

The fur is disgusting and unethical and awful and I would never buy it, but my granny had a fur coat and I never felt something so soft and warm

WandaWonder · 04/09/2023 08:33

I never wear jeans or leggings have nothing against then I just don't, after work or on weekends people can wear want they want, I just want to wear the same clothes i wear to work mainly apart from more casual shoes

I do dress how I want! Today I've got a yellow dress with navy lace detail, orange shorts and red shoes. To hell with plain and boring.
In winter I wear bright tights under dresses. Never black or jeans.
If I was dressing for absolute fantasy I'd be in an 18th century bodice but they're rather hard to come by on the high street.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 04/09/2023 08:36

@DatumTarum I think it very much depends where you live. Wealthy Home Counties town you can dress as flamboyantly as you want, no one will bat an eye lid. But yes if you live somewhere fairly deprived it’s easy to feel awkwardly overdressed if you are wearing anything beyond jeans/leggings/hoody. I’ve got some nice worthy looking Seasalt stuff, wouldn’t wear it in our local town centre but would wear it if I was visiting NT property or visit to John Lewis.

Disney Princess every day 🩷

I'd be wafting about like a 60s hippy. Flowing patterned things and some Biba.

Alas, I work in a "traditional" office and am short, so can't be a weekday hippy and find most wafty things 2ft too long.

We have a weekday hippy in our (professional) office. She looks fabulous.

Sadly a "dress code reminder" went round recently so her lovely peacock wings are being clipped.

My choice would be 1958 Dior.

I don’t see why you have to wear a ‘jeans or leggings uniform’ because it’s the UK n 2023 — I only wear leggings for running, and I seldom wear jeans.

If money and physique were no object I’d dress entirely in Margaret Howell and The Knotty Ones knitwear. I like oversized, androgynous stuff, and wear that anyway, but having a bosom and not much spare cash isn’t helpful.

Me too. On all counts.

PetiteNasturtium · 04/09/2023 08:45

Well I wore exactly what I wanted till the University I worked at started to be difficult and wanted everyone to be more corporate.

I remember wearing a camouflage skirt with bed socks and hiking boots and my kangaroo jumper that had a large pouch and zip. I also had my suffragette skirt as my colleague called it as it was very much an Edwardian era style long skirt to the ground, I also have a fab Japanese dress embellished with cats.

Once I started to dress more conservatively it was remarked on that I looked nice. The capacity of my brain and my work remained the same regardless of how I dressed. It was a defining moment and made me think less of those who remarked on it.

I have retired early now, last week I met my friend for lunch and wore a striped black and white dress that DH said would look good for playing tennis in the 1930’s with gold pumps that were lambasted on MN recently for being old lady with a red and black sarong that I wore as a wrap for my shoulders covered in yellow and golden fish that a colleague bought for me on a trip about 25 years ago.

You want Vestiaire, @hdbs17. Other pre-owned sites are available but this is an excellent place for encouragingly reduced luxury.

And you surely don’t work 24 hours a day? What’s to stop you finding reasons to leave the house in a blouse and skirt? Can’t comment on the stilettos - there’s such limitless choice of footwear available. I might choose a high block heel if I wanted to dress up a plain outfit.

Vestiaire Collective: Buy & sell designer second-hand fashion.

3 million items, 12,000+ brands. Luxury pre-loved fashion, up to 70% off. Expert authentication, trusted by millions.

'But I do have a small wardrobe of completely perfect things'

Oh that's the dream! Good for you 👍 I'll get there one day....

I pretty much dress how I want. I absolutely love print and colour, and clashes of both. I gave up heels years ago and live in trainers, occasionally boots. I never wear black unless I'm at a funeral. I've discovered soft bras that actually give you a proper shape, so no more underwire for me. I adore a loud lipstick. I get so much joy from clothes and make up and pulling outfits together

It makes me downright sad to see women on here asking if they're 'too old' (at 28 or 32 or whatever) to wear some completely uncontroversial item like white trainers. I have colleagues who live in black trousers because they're worried about the size of their bum - they would love to be more adventurous, but they think they're too 'fat' or 'old'. So black trousers uniform it is 😔 really sad

Gruelle · 04/09/2023 08:52

Your thumb looks awfully sarcastic, @Lottapianos!

Sad Grin

Gruelle · 04/09/2023 08:53

But agree with everything in your last paragraph.

Lottapianos · 04/09/2023 08:54

'Your thumb looks awfully sarcastic,@Lottapianos!'

It's really not! Getting a wardrobe like that organised takes a lot of time and dedication so respect from me

I used to live in a wealthy Home Counties town and it was jeans, blazers and ankle boots. Summer dresses allowed if blazing hot.

Was definitely quite conformative

This totally what I am up against!

(Your lunch outfit sounds fantastic btw)

Oh I agree with you.

However we do need to be employed, promoted, have some measure of social acceptance etc.

Just have to read the threads on here stressing about what to wear on the school run.

What job requires you to wear jeans or leggings but not a gold tried dress of lightweight silk?

If I were thinner, younger and had pre Raphaelite hair this is how i would look all the time. If I tried in my real life I would look more like the nanny character in Robin Hood Prince of thieves.

I dress how I like now. I love fashion and dressing up. I typically dress like a hippy raised by fairies. I love it. I wore a tiara out the other day because life is short and I wanted to.

Gruelle · 04/09/2023 09:02

In my case it’s, I dunno, involuntary stubbornness - I find it impossible to spend money on anything I don’t love. Certainly doesn’t feel in any way organised. I’m always surprised by posters who make lists and ‘fill in gaps’ - nothing so methodical would ever occur to me.

I really don't know what she sees in him 🤷🏻

@TheFutureMrsWolowitz , that's such a beautiful dress, but how would you get anything done, apart from sitting around looking mournful? Or is that part of the appeal? ☺️
