Approaching 40, achey knee, age or injury?

For a few weeks it's just been sore. Achey and stiff on the mornings, noticeable when I go up stairs etc.

Is it just my age now? 😂

What would you do with the information?

If it's sore, keep it gently mobile and it will recover.
If it's age, keep it gently mobile.
If it's injury, it will heal... faster if you keep it gently mobile.

I am twenty years older than you and began to have knee pain. Ignored it at first as thought it was age. Then l saw a physio and he sorted it in two weeks giving me exercises to do ongoing. Age or injury ..don't leave it.
See a physio.

Huh?

I'm just asking is this the age you start to get achey and stuff and it's par for the course. Obviously if it got worse if go to the Dr but it's just achey, so I was asking if other people my age experience it too.

Did you injure yourself many years ago ? I crashed a motorbike and the Dr at the time said you may get arthritis or at least some aches in that knee when you’re older, I was 19 at the time. Well he was right but it is only in cold damp weather. Did you do a lot of sport when you were young?

Changes17 · 04/09/2023 08:24

Older than you but when I had an a achey knee my chiropractor suggested exercises to strengthen the muscles in that area.

MissBiljanaElectronika · 04/09/2023 08:27

Do you do lots of sport?

My knee got achy/stiff in my late 40s when I started doing sport 4/5 times a week 😬

Are you overweight? Obesity impacts the joints especially in middle age

If not sporty and/or overweight it could be genetic I guess (arthritis etc can start in 40s, my DH had that)

Hope it eases up!

I find that walking, stretching and glucosamine help

Cinnamope · 04/09/2023 08:28

I’m 41 and I get this too…I think it’s a combination of age, being overweight and not being able to get away with unsupportive flat shoes anymore.

GreyCarpet · 04/09/2023 08:33

I only had achy joints in my late 30s because I was a couple of stone overweight.

Lost the weight, joint pain went.

I'm approaching 50 now and my back is a pain. Literally. If I sleep in the wrong postion for too long, I can't get out of bed without stretching first. But, other than that, I don't really suffer too much.

I did dislocate it at about 17 years old, but surlwy that can't be connected?

My BMI is 26.

I’m not a medical person but old injuries can cause issues, MIL had an op on her knee about a decade ago. She injured it originally when she took DH sledging as a very small child, he was 45 then.

Smartstuffed · 04/09/2023 14:50

Is your footwear providing enough arch support? You might only have pain in one knee rather than both if the leg you injured years ago might be more susceptible. (This is only a guess - no expert here.)

Allthestories · 04/09/2023 14:55

I'm 20 years older than you and I don't have achey knees. Get it looked at. The old dislocation injury is likely to have weakened it. A scan would be useful and good phsio will be able to help you with strengthening it.
