Apple watch type device for non- Apple users

DH is anti-Apple. Not open for debate on this thread, it's just how it is. However, I know he would love a device that measures steps, heart rate etc and can be linked with his phone - as I have with my Apple watch. He has no loyalty to a specific phone provider, so don't want anything that will only work with his phone. I've never had a fitbit so don't know if that might do the job? His exercise is mainly racket sports, the gym and walking if that makes a difference.
Thank you

A Fitbit is the way to go...

OMGitsnotgood · 03/09/2023 17:15

thank you @JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn.
So is there an app you can use with any phone?
Looks like there are lots of models, any recommendations? I need it to measure steps and heart rate for his activities, as per OP mainly racquet sports, gym and walking. He's also a keen swimmer but not sure if any are waterproof.

(Appreciate I could google a lot of this but am after people's actual experiences rather than 'what the website says')

Thanks

Yes there's an app, does everything from tracking exercise to weight management. I used the app even before I had a Fitbit.

Fitbit versa light if he wants it to look like an Apple Watch, does everything you suggest. There's a comparison tool on the website so you can select a few models to compare specs.

It really depends how much you want to spend and what functionality you want. The more basic fitbits (and similar) don’t have built in GPS so if you want to track walking routes rather than just count steps then you have to sync it to the GPS on your phone. or you need to spend more for one with built in GPS.
if you’re going for built in GPS then I’d consider a garmin rather than a Fitbit.

I have a Huawei watch and I love it. It has GPS and the new versions do ECGs etc.

There are many types of smartwatches out there.

Garmin and fitbit are the other two main brands i can think of.

I've had two fitbits and both dire- sure they are better now.

Ive started swimming and husband gave me his old fenix 3 hr Garmin that he used for triathlons and that works well in the pool. He now has an epix (no idea which one but it was £800!) Friend had a cheap amazon one and that did the job for steps and HR that was £15!

cherrypied · 03/09/2023 17:25

Oh and yes they all have apps so garmin has the connect app that I link to both strava and apple fitness.

t really depends how much you want to spend and what functionality you want.

I don't think DH would thank me for spending over £100 - less if possible. We could afford more but he's a bit of a tight arse and all finances shared.

I've had several Fitbits and really like them. I had one that was waterproof which was great for measuring swimming activities. My current one is a lot smaller, well under £100 and came with a free Premium account on the App so does everything you're asking for and more.

The only thing I would say is that they don't seem to last very long. I did get my last one replaced free of charge as it was within the 2-year warranty.

OMGitsnotgood · 04/09/2023 06:41

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn your current one sounds ideal, Which model is it ?
Question to all: any advice on best place to buy fitbits?
