70000 Burning Man festival goers stranded, and warned to ration food and water - 1 dead

This sounds so awful - an eagerly awaited festival descending into chaos because of flooding and rain in the desert closing all roads in and out. I hope no families with children are trapped

Those poor people - toilets and running water no longer working, no estimate of end date. Warned to remain warm and under shelter if possible, and ration their personal food and water.

I am assuming it is possible for supplies to be flown in by helicopter if necessary, even if it can't land.

If anyone on Mumsnet is there, sending you lots of love and best wishes

I’ve seen some videos on tiktok and it doesn’t look fun.

Sounds horrendous

No toilets plus floods sounds like a huge public health crisis!

SandGroperNomad · 03/09/2023 14:51

They will be able to fly supplies in by helicopters, and it's not been confirmed the death was caused by the weather conditions, which doesn't mean it's any less tragic. However, it appears there are some sensationalist headlines going around that are worded to make it look like the two are linked. Unfortunately deaths at festivals do happen without this weather for various reasons.

Thankfully it looks like people with RVs and trailers are helping out with those who are in tents and those were flooded.

It's not a place I would like to be right now though that's for sure, and I have loved my previous times at Burning Man (and their global equivalents)

I wouldn't like to be there. But having read articles, OP, you are being over-dramatic. The ones I've read have said there are plenty of supplies, and while it's pretty awful, the access delay is likely to be about 2 days.

The death is very sad but no details of the cause have yet been provided.

Some of the attendees seem to be leaving on foot to the motorways too.

Also, this is the US - they can evacuate each and every person from that site via the military if need be.

CinnamonSodaPop · 03/09/2023 15:51

The person sadly died by electrocution, a misadventure. It does sound like an overall bad situation.

The organisers are apparently offering bus transfers to Reno for those who are able to walk to the nearest road (8km walk). I'd imagine only those who are in good health would be able to go that far through thick mud though.

It always strikes me as a particularly bad place to have a festival in a dried up lake in a desert. It’s usually super dusty, what with it being in a desert, and only one road in and out.
This year it’s even more a nightmare! Why did no one check the forecast? This weather was predicted for over a week before.
You couldn’t pay me to go.
Hope they all get out soon.
