Fleas!

These past couple of days, I feel itchy, and now I have tiny bites that are as itchy as hell and because I've been scratching, they've bled and now look red and crusty and are still itchy. I have them mostly around my ankles, but several have now appeared in other part of my body. My skin is a right state!!

I do have a cat who I barely see these days, but it's a possibility that she's brought something in. Can I have some help to deal with this please? First of all, I cannot afford a visit to the vet and a prescription, so I'd be grateful for recommendations of treatments I can buy for my cat without prescription. Drops to go on her skin are preferable as she won't take tablets.

And what about me? What do I do beyond taking an antihistamine and using hydrocortisone? How do I stop the bites?

I have ordered Indorex also.

TIA.

You can buy flea treatments over the counter at the vets, you don’t need a prescription.

Use an anti-histamine for your bites. You treat the fleas, this is how you stop getting bitten.

Hoover everything and wash bedding on a hot wash. Use the Indorex, it’s fantastic. Hoover thoroughly every day and make sure you empty the bag or put a flea collar in there.

It’s a pain but it’s doable.

If the vet hasn't seen the cat for a while they won't prescribe a vet strength flea treatment over the counter.

You could try Advantage flea treatment. Think you can get it in pets at home

Advantage from pets at home. I called my vet and they wanted £60 for a consultation before prescribing. I think the neighbours cat has brought them in - they don't routinely de flea. Have seen none in my cats, (still treated) but got 6 (6!!!!!!!) Tiny ones jumped on my bare foot in the space of 10 minutes, same place in the room. I was bloody horrified.

Have treated the cats, doused the house in indorex and haven't seen another one. Going to indirex again though.

Vets online do a much cheaper treatment with the same ingredient as Advantage. You need to check the ingredients. Fipronil is no good. I forget the ingredient in Advantage but it's a good one.

You can get flea bombs from Amazon. These are great to put in a room and it kills pretty much everything (take any plants out!). Also flea spray to spray eg. Floor cracks (we have floor boards) or anywhere the cat tends to go. This is flea season.

Do not use the instant flea killer on animals. The fleas just jump off and it's also really bad for them plus it doesn't last. You need to get the one which lasts a month for your cat (Advantage or the own brand with same ingredient).

Ive had advantage ( normally use advocat but wanted something asap)and my cats were still crawling.
ive had to go to the vets for advocat and a spray for the house.

Get the pets at home prescription strength flea treatment and get flea bombs for the house. I think we put 4 (2 up and 2 down) with doors open and never saw another flea!

Advantage has the exact same flea killing ingredients as Advocate. Advocate also kills some worms which advantage doesn't

Is it a good idea to put a flea collar on my cat? She's fine with a normal collar.

You could though I'm not sure how effective they are.

Indorex spray is my default treatment for the house as well as vet prescription of spot on treatments.
