Downstairs bedroom

We're in a 3 bed house at present dc share, office as dh wfh and our bedroom. In the future dc will need own rooms so I'm thinking of all ideas. Dh office is the Box room. We have 2 downstairs reception rooms and wondering about using one as a bedroom or whether that would annoy me? It's a big room so wasted as an office. We will be extending kitchen so hopefully won't miss that space too much. Anyone using a downstairs room as bedroom? Pros and cons?

It’s much cooler in warm weather

I live on a street of new build three story houses. There is a study downstairs which lots of people use as a bedroom. Some people have their teenager in theirs and some have it as the master bedroom. There a downstairs toilet and a few have made this into a wet room.

We have a downstairs toliet so I suppose could do that thanks @LittleBrenda . I hadn't considered us downstairs But that might be the best idea fir the future, both happy sharing at moment but getting to an age they will want privacy.

All the parents I know who are downstairs love it. Away from the dc. Grin

And that way the children are together on the same floor

I've never been in an Australian house that doesn't have a downstairs bedroom. They're great. For the UK, access to a bathroom is an issue.

It’d be a no from me, since unless it’s seriously freezing I need bedroom windows open (and not just a crack) at night, so it’d be a security issue.

My friend converted his garage into a children's playroom but with a bed in there (a sofa bed type thing). He found that the kids usually slept in there to be honest 😂 he put a tv in there so it's very cool for the tweens and works well. The only issue is no bathroom.

We are looking at doing the same thing - having a play area downstairs that's also a bedroom. But again, putting a shower in our downstairs loo might be tricky.

Another option is putting a "garden office" type set up (a lot near me have done this). Then the oldest child has like a granny flat at the bottom of the garden. Again, bathrooms can be an issue as you need planning for running water.

I was in a downstairs bedroom as a child/teenager and personally hated it. I felt isolated from the family, feelings of being “lesser” as the youngest to not get a proper upstairs bedroom like my siblings, and would always think about the fact that if an intruder broke in, they would get to me first.

I think if you want a downstairs bedroom then you and DH should sleep in it.

We have two downstairs bedrooms and a shower room. When dds were at home they slept upstairs and we slept downstairs. It was brilliant when they were teenagers, we could get on with everything downstairs without disturbing them and we all had privacy. Now they’ve left we use the downstairs room in summer because it’s much cooler, we do have the little half light windows open, safe area so no worries.
