Smelly Washing Machine and Kitchen Sink

How do you stay on top of them smelling fresh? With the washing machine, I do the special clean cycle and put Dettol cleaner at £3 each time, and two days later it’s funky again. Same with kitchen sink, bleach and boiling water regularly, Dr Muscle gel every now and then, still smells. Thank you!

You need to leave the washing machine door and soap compartment open in-between washes. That stops the smell.

I saw someone recommend putting a dishwasher tablet in the washing machine on a hot wash to give it a clean. Clean inside the rubber door seal with a cloth, that can get build up, and take the dispenser drawer out. If you don’t keep the door open and wash it regularly it can get mouldy underneath and on the bit above the drawer.

Do the sink and washing machine share a drain?

Yes, they share the drain - does that make a difference?

I was about to say check your drains!

Yes, if they share a drain the smell could be coming up from the drain.

It doesn't have to be blocked to be giving off a funky smell.

Try Jeyes fluid down the outside drains (DON'T use it indoors though). Flush it through with kettles of boiling water.

What do you use in your washing machine to wash clothes? Liquid, pods or powder? What temperature do you wash at and for how long?

Bobbybobbins · 02/09/2023 22:39

We had this and it ended up with clothes coming out of the washer smelling bad. Turned out a flexible pipe thing had shifted and washing up water was ending up in our machine 🤢

There’s an anti stench thing (valve?) on your kitchen drain, it might be in the open position thus allowing smells to come into the washing machine/kitchen. I only know this because we had a new kitchen fitted two years ago and the kitchen fitter told us about it.
He had to go outside to sort it out, I think YouTube has videos on how to do fix it.
I only use Washing powder now. And no softener.
I’ve recommended chucking a few dishwasher tablets into the w/machine to clean it on here. Just an empty machine on a hot wash, 60c. and three or four d/w tablets.
Yes to leaving the door open between washes and also leave the dispenser drawer slightly open too.

I run a 90c wash once a month word the machine empty , I put a capful of zoflora in and as others have said leave the door open after a wash to help it all dry out. I also don’t close it fully between use. I put a capful of zoflora in the plug hole and pour boiling water after it. Bleach becomes inactive in hot water so using it with boiling water is a bit useless.
