Is there any point going to a and e?

Yesterday I came off my sons scooter, before anyone says, yes I know I am a complete idiot. Anyway, I came off hard and my wrist is agony. I have a brace/splint so is there any point dragging my ds5 to sit with me for several hours in the urgent care centre(lone parent no childcare available until after school monday and nearest uc over 30 minutes drive away with no taxis). If it's broken will they do anything other than splint it and painkillers?

I think wrists can be dodgy if not properly cared for. Healing badly and giving long term problems. I would go to A&E personally.

FFS, don't be a martyr. You wouldn't say the same if it were your child with the agonisingly wrist just because you have a splint in the house. I hope.

Get it seen. Badly healed bones can bring a lifetime of pain or require surgery to correct.

I would go. Pack up snacks, electronics,
Power bank if you have one, card games- as much as you can fit in a rucksack to entertain DC. It won't be fun, but sometimes that's unavoidable and will be preferable to long term suffering if you have done any real damage.
I always have some things downloaded on iplayer for DC to watch if we end up stuck waiting anywhere. He doesn't get much tablet time but this is exactly the kind of scenario I think it is brilliant!

My wrist was in plaster for 6 weeks when I broke mine. Have you got plaster at home?

justasking111 · 02/09/2023 09:04

Please get it looked at and reset if necessary. Wrists are complicated and as others said you don't want a lifetime of pain and reduced use of your hand. I had a complicated reset of a finger at the hospital was told that without I'd get arthritis. Thirty years later no arthritis. Whereas my son has had two operations on his foot to correct metatarsals and is in pain a lot. They've offered a third operation now.

I came off a scooter and broke my wrist so badly it needed emergency surgery. The pain was bad but bearable and I resisted going to hospital as I was abroad.

I would have been in dire straits if I hadn’t decided to go.

As PP said, pack up stuff for him to do and get it seen.

I hope you’re ok.

Thanks all. I went and It's not broken which everyone seemed surprised about. Its badly sprained so just ice, normal painkillers and rest.

Glad you got it seen though! I badly sprained my ankle many moons ago and the recovery would have been FAR quicker and simpler if it had been a break.... Don't underestimate what a pig a sprain can be and definitely look after it and yourself!
