Suggestions of activities for a 19 year old male that needs complete bed rest for a week

Asking for DD’s boyfriend who is laid up with a bad back. She’s given him a list of box-sets/movies to binge but is trying to come up with alternative ideas. I’ve suggested him trying to learn something or research something.

Anyone have any ideas?

Colouring, crosswords, suduko, give him a list of fabulous 'must read' books, mediation, DuoLingo to learn a language?

BorrowedThyme · 01/09/2023 18:08

learn a language on duolingo

Origami? Painting Warhammer models? Building a model aeroplane?

They would require sitting up, which might be a problem?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 01/09/2023 18:11

I think staying in bed with a bad back is the worst thing you can do for it 🤔

Futurelearn

Riverlee · 01/09/2023 18:13

Duolingo
adult colouring books
puzzle books
airfix model

I thought you were supposed to move around with a bad back also (or is it post op?)

seriallylurking · 01/09/2023 18:13

Michel Thomas language tapes (on audible iirc)

PerspiringElizabeth · 01/09/2023 18:14

Crochet! 😄 he might absolutely love it. What I’d do for a week in bed crocheting (minus the bad back of course, poor thing).

whatwhhat · 01/09/2023 18:14

Lego

Rollergirl11 · 01/09/2023 18:15

I agree I don’t think he should lie in bed the whole time. He says that’s when it hurts the most. So I think sitting at a table for a bit should be doable. The point is he will be home alone for at least a week and will need to keep himself distracted.

Some kind of model building/construction/lego would be good I think.

I'm enjoying Duolingo.

Audiobooks? Rivers of London and anything by Andy Weir should fill the time.

I'm surprised bed rest has been advised.

I didn't realise that people were advised to do this anymore.

30 years ago I spent 2 weeks in hospital resting a bad back. All it did was make things worse. Nowadays the advice is usually to keep as mobile as possible and do exercises to strengthen your core muscles that support the spine.

Rollergirl11 · 01/09/2023 18:18

Sorry DD got it wrong. They didn’t say bed rest but that he needs to rest as in not go to work, gym, drive etc. He will be having some physio sessions too.

Lego.

burnoutbabe · 01/09/2023 18:21

Can't he just play on his Xbox or ps5 for a week? That's what I do if I have a week off!

ToxicPositivity · 01/09/2023 18:25

YouTube NHS physio back exercises and do them. Seriously, I first did my back in at 15, it's taken until my 30s to get proper help.

That's good he's getting physio.
Nothing worse than a bad back

I don't think a 19 year old lad needs advice from mumsnet on how to fill a week sitting around the house Grin

veggie50 · 01/09/2023 21:02

This is not an activity advise but when I had a bad back, the most comfortable thing to do is to hang sideway prone on a hammock, or failing that lying prone on a large pouffe. He can listen to podcast / music / audible while doing that. Hope he recovers soon!
