For the past week, I've been suffering with really bad pain in my bottom teeth (feels like a couple of them on the left hand side) and I don't know what is causing it. I flossed and had Corsodyl but it didn't improve, so I went to the dentist. She was also at a loss as she said my teeth are clean, no swollen gums, and she even took an X-ray of the area and it was fine. She told me though that as the pain was in the lower left side, and I was experiencing occasional palpitations, that I should visit the doctor in case it was a heart problem. I went to the doctor a few hours later and he doesn't think it's related to my heart. He said it could be 'silent reflux' where the acid is coming up in the night and damaging the teeth, but I don't really get acid reflux and surely the dentist would've been able to spot that? One of the teeth in the area has the top missing off it as I chipped it a long time ago so I wonder if it could be that, though it has never caused me problems before.
The pain is like sensitive tooth pain but very intense and only occasionally subsides. Drinking or eating very hot/cold things doesn't make it worse. The only other thing I can think is that my thyroid appears to be swollen so I wonder if it could be pressing on a nerve? I do have hypothyroid and have been having problems lately. Please can anyone advise - it's horrendous! Sad

Can’t help with why but I recently had toothache and used clove oil, total miracle, took away the pain quickly.

Sinusitis? Although usually that's on the upper jaw and you eventually get other symptoms as well.

If not - it's more rare, I have had neuropathic pain in my teeth/jaw.
Had to go to specialists and it was trial and error with medications....

Can you move your jaw normally without the pain increasing?
TMJ pain can feel like it's coming from the teeth.

X rays can't be relied on, they didn't show the longitudinal crack in my back tooth, dentist kept telling me my teeth were fine. Eventually went to a private dentist with a better x ray machine, tooth was removed with difficulty, plus bits of bone as by then there was a bone infection.

Are you talking about top or bottom teeth? Could you attach a picture (to show if you have any gum recession that could be causing sensitivity). Did the dentist take any x-rays? When did you last have X-rays taken?

18daychallenge · 01/09/2023 18:06

Oh sorry - I’ve just RTFT now and you’ve answered most of my questions. Could you try using the a fork prong or toothpick and biting on it (gently) on each cusp. Cracked cusp?

Britneyfan · 01/09/2023 20:14

it could be trigeminal neuralgia perhaps? Ask your GP to refer you to neurology. I can’t se that it would have anything to do with your thyroid.

How are your ears?? I keep suffering from benign positional vertigo and that starts with tooth pain. I also went to the dentist assuming I needed a filling

I was about to post the same. It can be very painful.

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions. I'll have to go back to the dentist on Monday, hopefully it's something simple to sort out. If not then I'll have to go to the doctors about it. I will update if it goes away or if I find out what's causing it!!

Agree with neuralgia or sinus , I’m currently dealing with a perforated sinus from tooth extraction and surprisingly the pain is in a lot of locations

TheFairyCaravan · 01/09/2023 20:48

If you tap the tooth or bite on it does it make it worse? That would indicate an infection but it should have shown up on an X-ray really.

CantFindTheBeat · 01/09/2023 20:56

It could be a hairline crack in the tooth that is causing nerve damage.

I had debilitating general top right tooth/jaw pain for about 6 weeks before I could finally pinpoint which tooth it was.

Dentist did X-rays and nerve checks on everything but just couldn't locate it.

Was about to have see a specialist for trigeminal neuralgia, then work up one day and it was clearly a specific tooth that was the pain spot.

had specialist non-standard root canal too save the tooth, clear it drill it, cap it.

I hope you get it sorted OP.

Tooth pain is horrendous and not prioritised 💕

Thoughts:
Vertical fracture
Take dental X-rays from different angles
TMJDS
Trigeminal neuralgia
Shingles-related pain usually upper though on one side before the vesicles emerge.

Nomorebeer22 · 01/09/2023 21:06

Sinus infection?
I am currently on antibiotics and steroid nasal spray for it. The pain in my teeth on one side (especially when I lay down) was absolutely awful. Struggled on for 3 weeks before going to GP.

herbygarden · 01/09/2023 21:07

Also think TMJ - I have had it for years and it recently flared up, I was convinced it was a tooth problem but it wasn't it was just the TMJ :(

Teddypops · 01/09/2023 21:07

Could you be grinding or clenching your teeth in your sleep? Try a mouth guard?

I clench my teeth when I get stressed and find a mouth guard stops my teeth from hurting.

Bibbitybobbitty · 01/09/2023 21:17

Could be a cracked tooth? had similar last Yr & took a couple of visits to work it out, nothing to see on xrays etc.

CallieTR · 01/09/2023 21:27

Another vote for sinus issues,

I get awful teeth pain with it. Also awful neck pain, weirdly.

As a short term measure try a hot compress on your face!
