Speeding

I think I was caught by a speed camera today doing 34/35 in a 30. I was in the wrong and expect to pay any fines, go on courses or take points.

I thought it was a 40, but I had just gone into a 30. It is signed but I paid attention to the speed showing on my SatNav which on further monitoring doesn't update very quickly when going into a new speed limit. My fault, I've learnt that lesson now.

The trouble is, I've been through that road three times this week. I can't recall what speed I was doing, but this was during a usually busy daytime so I was going at roughly the same speed as others on the road. However I'm worried because I thought I was within the speed limit today.

Does anyone have any experience of being caught speeding more than once by the same camera in a short space of time?

I have never had any points on my license before, if that's relevant.

This happened to me. I ran up two or three fines on the same road without realising. But it should only be three points per offence and so unless you have managed to tot up four fines then you won't be facing a ban. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply.

I guess I just have to wait it out Confused feeing sick with worry.

Oops.

I don't trust SatNav speed limits. There's a clearly marked 20mph zone near me that's a 3 mile run, and Google Maps still insists it's a 30.

Yes, I realise that now. I won't be doing it again.

Is that an indicated 34/35? Is so it’s more like a real 33 and you’re unlikely to hear anything. Is the car registered to you? Hopefully it is so a max of 14 days to find out. If you were doing a similar speed each day and breached the trigger threshold then you’re likely to get a course for one and then 3 points/£100 for each of the other two, you’ve got a clean licence so it won’t be the end of the world.

anxiousatnight · 02/09/2023 08:48

Indicated 34/35, so hopefully I was actually going slightly less than that.

The first two times I drove through there I didn't give it a second thought. I was only because yesterday I looked at my speedometer and realised I was over, now that's making me question my other trips.

I think this probably has not much to do with speeding and everything to do with my anxiety (hence my username!).

My bil got caught twice on the same road on the same day. Once of the way to where he was going and then on the way back. He got 2 fines and 2 x 3 points on his licence.

You might get away with it as the speed wasn't significantly over and it might have been recorded lower than what it shows u.

PuttingDownRoots · 02/09/2023 08:56

I've been through road side indicators that show I'm doing 27 when my car says 30...

Added to the error margin in the camera, you might just get away with it this time.

You've learnt to be more careful in future though hopefully!

This - don't trust sat nav speed limits. This week, I noticed that my sat nav says the speed limit is 60, in what's actually a 30mph built-up area with speed bumps in one section. There aren't any 60 mph roads for a couple of miles! Lesson learnt, but you really can't rely on the sat nav for speed limits.

2boysandmanchild · 04/09/2023 14:53

If you are paying that much attention to the sat nav, that you didn't see a speed limit sign on the road, then you are not paying enough attention to the road. Will it be a child that you manage not to see the next time that you are looking at the sat nav? There are plenty of signs on the road, all of the information that you need to drive from a to b is there when you look out of the windscreen. If you do need to use the sat nav for directions, have the volume up and listen to the directions. No need to look at it.

My most used accessory is the speed limiter ...

2boysandmanchild · 04/09/2023 14:58

Is that something on a sat nav? The only speed limiter that I use is my right foot.

Had it in every car since 2010.

Originally it was a function of the cruise control (which is what I wanted). But you can't really cruise in the UK. Certainly not the times I tend to drive. So now I exclusively use the limiter. In fact I don't think I have ever used the cruise control on my latest car.

Most fancy one was in a hire Ford that combined GPS and reading the road signs to automatically set the limited.

Given one of my regular routes is a 3 mile 20 mph zone, I find it useful. (Not so sure about the cars behind me).

SmudgeButt · 04/09/2023 15:20

If you do get a ticket for going 33 in a 30 zone you might try pepipoo website on how to fight the ticket. Generally there's an acknowledgement that speedometers aren't accurate and that a 10% leeway should be allowed.

Meanwhile - local to us there was a road that always had signs saying 40 and then it was completely renovated and all the signs were removed so there's no obvious speed limit. DH's satnav shows it still as 40 but given that it's an urban road I'm sticking to 30 (ish) to be safe. It means that sometimes I get some twonk riding my bumper in a vain attempt to make me accelerate. I would prefer that signs were up to make the situation clear to drivers.

The only limiters I use are the ones fitted by certain German manufacturers and even then I normally have them mapped out.

Wait until you are in a 20 and some twunt thinks it's a 30 ....

BlondeScarySpice · 04/09/2023 15:43

You might be ok as a lot of police forces allow 10%+1 before proceeding. So over 34 and generally speedos show a tiny bit more than you are travelling. Learn from this experience and don’t have such a heavy right foot in future.

That really really rankled with the lady on my SAC who was done for 32 in a 30.

Imisssleep2 · 04/09/2023 15:50

If you were speeding each time, you will get a fine/ points for each occurrence. Sat navs should never be relied on for the speed limit as they are not accurate, don't take roadworks into consideration etc. However I find car Speedos usually read a little higher than the actual, so 33mph may well have been 30, apparently the do allow a 10% over so these two things combined may just save you. If only a bit over and you haven't done a speed awareness course recently, you will be able to opt for that instead of the points on your license.

Ps I think they have to issue the fine within 14 days, so if you haven't heard in 3 weeks allowing for postage, you may be able to breathe a bit easier

It’s whether someone can be bothered to take it to court and question the calibration of the equipment and possibly their own speedometer. If she’d risked it I reckon they stood a good chance of getting it thrown out at court. But sometimes it easier to just do the course.

OldTinHat · 04/09/2023 16:07

Depending on whether they own rather than lease a vehicle or if it’s a company car. The police have to send the Notice of Intended Prosecution within 14 days to the registered keeper but if it’s not theirs the NIP could go to the company that owns the car, they name the business they lease to, they name the branch, they name the member of staff (driver). The recipients have 28 days each time to respond so depending on the vehicle it could be three months before someone hears in some cases.

Everything that was prophesised (well nearly everything) on my SAC has come to pass. As the instructors said, we were lucky in a way to have been given a heads up.
