Yes I can understand how it would be quite moving in that scenario. And it was a moving song generally. I think I just don't tend to cry at musicals.
I could perhaps have done without the gender swapping stuff. The women playing men, fine, as that just seemed like there weren't enough men in the small theatre group that was doing it, and it wasn't a big deal, but the men playing women seemed to add a bit of an element of panto at times, which I didn't like, personally, but I guess some people might have found it funny.
They had the memorial scene in the one I saw as well; I hadn't realised that was new.
I found the music accompaniment really loud (which may have been a function of where I was sitting, I'm not sure), and the voices not quite loud enough, and when some of the lyrics are very fast, rap style, it got a bit hard to hear any of the words. I'm not sure I'd recommend listening to it beforehand unless you want to spoil the plot/jokes etc, but I think I'd like to listen to/read the lyrics now and then go watch it a second time!!
I think the shenanigans in Spain with the ambassadors etc got a little farcical, and from what I understand, was a bit inaccurate in terms of what happened, but I guess was a good way to show that they had to go to some lengths to make sure that it was picked up by the Germans.
