I'm trying to get a few ideas beyond the obvious for my 16-year-old. What else could he do apart from working in hospitality or supermarkets?

Thanks

I worked in a care home at weekends. Very useful on the CV for getting jobs throughout life when I needed extra cash.

£20 an hour for NHS housekeeping sounds pretty reasonable, it must be a pretty gross job.

Mine worked in a bowling alley.

Yep time £11.45 and 41% Saturday and time + 83% Sundays. Out of interest is she allowed in the pension scheme at that age? Just curious really.

@Ozgirl75
Housekeeping is usually the ward housekeeper so clean patient tables, fill water kids, collect used plates/cups etc do the tea round, serve food, clean the kitchen etc

I'm a domestic in the NHS and it's not gross at all because the hospital (I work in) is clean. I am re cleaning things that are already clean (or should be) daily. HCAs clean up bodily fluids then we clean again afterwards. I've done a few cleaning jobs and it's nothing like what I've encountered cleaning up in offices 🤣

Jugs not kids!

Ozgirl75 · 01/09/2023 19:21

@pepsimax00 ah ok, I assumed it was cleaning up blood and other bodily fluids!
Still a v important job though in keeping the place clean to keep people healthy.

She doesn’t currently- I think it will kick in when she is 18 though.
and yeah- all she moans about is the heat but that because a lot of the hospital is old with no air conditioning/ climate control. It’s a good little job and I’m very jealous of her spending!!

I don't know what the problem is with supermarkets. They pay proper minimum wage, not the under 18 rate, and give holiday and sick pay. Then if your child goes to uni they might be able to give them a job in that area. A friend's daughter worked for Curry's and they did the same

@Hotsausage2
Good for her! Yes our heating is still on all day and infection control took our air conditioning fan away Confused

If he doesn't want to do hospitality or shop work, maybe something like warehouse work? Order picking? I had several of those jobs at 16/17/18 and honestly they were some of the best times of my life, hanging out with loads of like minded young people. I would have hated working any kind of customer service job tbh so if that's the issue I can thoroughly recommend warehouse work! Cleaning was ok as well (as in office/industrial rather than residential house cleaning) but a bit less social. I actually got a temp job in Yankee Candles just packing orders during COVID as I had no job for a wee while (I'm usually a lawyer) and it just reminded me how fun it is. There were loads of teens there.
