Anyone had an ovary and cyst removed?

Currently in hospital after having emergency surgery yesterday - just one ovary, not both

Would like to hear positive recovery stories. Please no negatives - leave that bit out - my worry-o-meter is off the scale as it is!

I had this and recovered fine! I did need to take it easy for a few weeks but I think the healing was pretty quick. Mine wasn't emergency though and it was laparascopic which obviously reduces the healing time. Was yours open surgery?

neveragainagain · 01/09/2023 09:04

Yes. Twice.

  1. planned surgery, removal of ovary and large dermoid cyst. Recovery was straight forward. About 6 weeks til I went back to work.

  2. second time was emergency surgery. A and E thought it was a bowel issue but when they put the camera in they saw blood everywhere from burst ovarian cyst that had been leaking for 16 hours (internal bleeding) which had caused imminent collapse, so they cut me from belly button downwards.

They removed the cyst, stitched the leak and removed much of the ovary.

Recovery was mainly dictated by the large incision. If you get away without that you'll recover a lot lot quicker.

I had also lost a lot a blood through internal bleeding so if that's not an issue you will again recover a lot quicker. My recovery for this one was slow, I'm afraid to say, about 10 weeks. But I don't think you're in that situation.

I subsequently went on to have two naturally conceived children. That's what I mainly came on to say.

Thank you both! I had keyhole surgery so four tiny incisions and they swapped my coil over whilst they were at it!

First time having a general anaesthetic though - I was terrified but it was fine!!

I had a 30cm one removed and lmmy ovary & tube. Like a previous poster I was cut downward from my belly button so recovery was longer. But also went on to have 2 children. Still having regular periods at 47, no sign of menopause yet. So the loss of my ovary doesn't seem to have greatly affected things - this is what I was most worried about.

PricklyWhenWet · 01/09/2023 09:09

Yes one ovary and cyst plus both tubes. Was laparoscopic and I felt absolutely fine within a couple of days. In fact I had to consciously stop myself overdoing it because I felt so normal. Job is physical so longer off work than otherwise but no issues.

10cm cyst and ovary removed by laparoscope some 15 years ago. Overnight in hospital. Worst thing was discovered I am allergic to morphine so lots of vomiting, but after 2 days was really pretty good. Couple of weeks of rest, then back to normal. 58 now and still having regular periods, so didn't affect that at all. Actually getting a bit fed up now!

Excitedannie · 01/09/2023 09:26

Ah you're all making me feel better!!! Mine was 6cm so just a baby in comparison SmileSmileSmile

Thanks for all your positivity!!!

Exactly what I had about a decade ago.

Recovery was fine for me. I was a bit achy and sore, but started short walks immediately and those really helped.

Stitches were itchy as feck and oozed, so nurse at my gp removed them for me after a week. One was deep inside my belly button and that one being gone was just delightful.

I'd say it was 6 weeks before I was fully back to normal, but moving like I was 40 years older was probably 10 days, max.

Baldieheid · 01/09/2023 09:31

I was sick with the general anaesthetic too, so had an overnight stay, and felt crap on co-codamol once I got home, so after 1 dose, i was painkiller free. Genuinely managed without even paracetamol.

I had an ovary and dermoid cyst removed 24 years ago.
It was huge with my son lying on top so a C section.
I went on to have a healthy now 20 year old DD nature's way.

Excitedannie · 01/09/2023 10:48

My DD is 15 and absolutely plans to have anymore so that bit is over and done with!!!

Just been for a walk to the toilet - not far but felt nice to get up - albeit shaky and whoozy!!

And how long does this bloomin dry mouth go in for?!?!

JSmithIloveyou · 01/09/2023 10:56

Yes about 16 ( not all at once) laparoscopy key hole. Two were dermoid ( hair teeth bones) and huge.
Recovery was very quick.( Its not classed as major surgery).
Well seemed quick because I'd had worse gynecological surgery ( laparotomies open surgery to remove adhesions from womb/ bowels/ ovaries and tubes/ bladder ).
Hope you recovery quick and well..take care and listen to your body..

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/09/2023 10:57

No but friend did. The remaining ovary picked up the slack and she had two boys very quickly!

Shergill15 · 01/09/2023 11:05

Hi, I had a huge endometrioma and one ovary and tube removed in 2012. Due to size it was a full laparotomy rather than keyhole. Spent a few nights in hospital and was off work a few weeks after. Some (expected) post op pain but this was totally manageable with the prescribed pain relief. Went on to conceive DD naturally and the surgery did massively improve the issues caused by endometriosis so overall it was positive!

Had a cyst the size of a grapefruit removed with keyhole surgery (planned) and (unplanned) the ovary and fallopian tube with it, as they had been crushed. Quick and easy recovery, no trouble since. They did my coil at the same time, too, which was very helpful of them.

Get well soon 😊

bogoblin · 01/09/2023 11:28

Yes, a gigantic cyst and the ovary it had squashed! I had a large laparotomy surgery but recovered really well - my remaining ovary picked up the slack and my periods have been normal and no problems ever since. I saw you say you have no plans for any more children, but for anyone else reading who has been through the same thing - I have gone on to have three natural pregnancies with no problems :)

Hope you recover soon OP!

Excitedannie · 01/09/2023 20:53

At home and in my own bed which feels nice! Thanks for all your positive help!

Exactly the same, 25 years ago. It was a big op then, no keyhole stuff: but all good and a 21 year old DS appeared.

It's still quite a big surgery, even with the keyhole, so look after yourself

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/09/2023 21:25

Great op. Can’t beat your own bed!

longtompot · 01/09/2023 22:20

My sister had this earlier this year. She thought it was her appendix but it was a cyst on her right ovary. She had both removed a week later via keyhole surgery, and bar a bit of pain for a week or so, she is absolutely fine.

Excitedannie · 05/09/2023 22:10

Can I just ask how long was it before any of you drove?
