Does anyone fly domestic flights regularly in the UK?

Sorry for the dull question.
but I wonder what is the latest you can check in when you are flying within the UK?
google says 2 hours before but is it a case that it then closes and it’s too late to check in after that.
i.e. If I arrive 1.5 hours before the flight I am too late?

Check-in online and if you are not checking in bags you just need to leave enough time to get through security and before the gate closes.

In this case I can’t check in online as I am part of a group booking arranged by my workplace.

Check in usually closes 40mins to an hour before the flight depending on the airline

I thought it was an hour before -but I am usually there with more time than that.

I think it depends on the airline. There's a big difference if you're flying from somewhere like Newquay where yours might be the only flight going that hour and the airport is tiny which means that, if you cut it fine, it's very easy to jump any queues than if you're going from a major hub and are caught up with thousands of other people all going to different destinations.

The gates close 30 minutes before departure.

If you're checking online and you don't need to check in luggage you need to scan your boarding pass before the 30 minute cutoff after which your pass will be deactivated and you will be unable to open the barriers with it.

The only exception is if your flight is delayed and then you can appeal to an attendant who will check and let you through if they are nice.

I fly several times a month and sometimes several times a week btw

All the various minimum timings can depend on the airport/individual terminals.

At some (?all) of the Heathrow Terminals you have to go through "conformance", and for example at T5 that's the point you swipe your boarding pass prior to security.

Last time I looked at their rules you had to do that no later than 35 minutes prior to scheduled departure.

Depending on the airport, whether you have to queue to hand in luggage for the hold, and if it’s at a time which has long security queues, an hour might be cutting it fine.

hopeishere · 01/09/2023 07:54

Depends on if you have bags to check on or not. Pre covid I would cut it extremely fine sometimes - small local airport with predictable queues. So I'd aim to be there an hour before knowing I'd have time to get through the gate. Get a drink and get in the plane.

Trumpton · 01/09/2023 08:05

Small local airport here. I allow an hour but if flying back from Gatwick, Heathrow or a large airport 1.5 hours with hand luggage 2 hours with hold luggage.

Whataretheodds · 01/09/2023 08:08

Depends on airport and airline.

Where are you flying from? Do you have bags to check in?

Work travel for me would mean that the person who had booked would check in the group - usually a PA rather than one of the travellers. Then you just need enough to get through security and get to the gate. I’ve done it with 40 mins to go but it depends on the airport as people have said. Heathrow is a different beast to East Mids.
if you have to check in yourself then I would say 1.15 is the closest I’d cut it but if you’re doing it regularly you’ll get to know your airport and how long it takes.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/09/2023 09:05

It depends on the airline and the flight. Ideally someone from your work should check you in online beforehand. It's quicker and if it's an airline that overbooks, it reduces the risk of you being bumped from the flight.

Then the airport, because you have to go through security with everyone else using the airport and that's usually what takes time. I fly to the Isle of Man a lot, which is effectively domestic.

If I go from Liverpool, if I arrived an hour before the flight, I'd almost certainly have loads of time.

If I have to go from Manchester, 2 hours could be cutting it fine. I avoid it where possible, but sometimes the flight times are better. Once I arrived at about 7 am for a 9 am flight and didn't get to the gate until 8.50 and only got on because the gate was right next to security and they didn't start boarding until 9.10. If they'd have boarded and gone on time, I'd have missed the flight.
