Does this look like a tick?

DH just removed this from my calf. Am in France and have been running/walking/cycling most days. I don’t have any alcohol wipes etc and just wiped with face wipe. Leg looks fine.

Does this look like a tick?

Yes. But it might not have bitten you and even if it did 1) you appear to have got it out whole 2) not all tick bites lead to nasty things. Just keep an eye out for a bullseye rash or flu like symptoms in the next month or so and if you get either go to your gp and explain you think you were bitten by tick

(Ds was bitten 7 years ago on holiday, we got it out and he was absolutely fine)

Yes. They're quite common where I live. I removed one from my own leg last week.
Keep an eye on it to see if a ring appears, and even if one doesn't but you get flu like symptoms make sure you tell the doctor about the tick. I don't think they check in the UK.

Agreed! I've never been bitten. DS has been bitten more than once and has been fine.

Thanks. I had bought a tick remover tool before we came on holiday. We were walking through wooded area yesterday and long grass and I was wearing capri pants. It was firmly in my skin and still alive. I’ll keep an eye out for symptoms. Makes me feel a bit 🤢

Definitely a tick. Taking a tick out is better than taking half a tick out! Hope you stay well.

Thanks everyone! I’m glad I bought the tick remover. It was after a French friend in the UK got bitten and couldn’t find one. Spotted it in Boots about a month ago and figured it might be useful to have but that it might join all the other “useful” items I own.

I've had Lyme disease. If you start seeing any sort of rash get some anti biotics. My sister was given some as a precaution when she was bitten but I don't think that's normal practice.

AssetTag22 · 31/08/2023 23:35

I reported it via an online app as still in France. It mentions taking preventative antibiotics but I’m leaving on Saturday so don’t have time to hunt down a doctor but might ask at the pharmacy next to supermarket tomorrow.

It's a tick, but before you panic too much, you have removed it whole and alive, so that should be the end of that. Not all ticks have lyme disease either - as others say, just keep an eye on your body where the tick was, any rash or bullseye type colouring, get down to the Docs asap. It is quite unpleasant, I had to pull one out from under my breast, several days after being in a tick infested area, and I did go to the docs (with said tick in a plastic bag (still alive creepily)) but he told me not to worry, threw it in the bin, and told me to come back if any rash or discolouration occurred.

ConsuelaHammock · 01/09/2023 01:12

I’ve had lymes and it was a truly horrible experience. Took me a year to recover properly with several doses of antibiotics. I went to the doctor at the first sign of symptoms and was still very ill. Hopefully you’ll be ok but if you start to feel like you have the flu, dizzy, fatigued or like morning sickness go and see your gp immediately.

ConsuelaHammock · 01/09/2023 01:13

I never got a rash and only had a small mark on the back of my knee which my friend noticed as I was climbing some steps in front of her. Never saw a tick!

Juhw · 01/09/2023 02:35

I once had a tick and was very worried about Lyme disease etc but I read that the tick usually has to be attached for at least 24 hrs before it feeds (🤢) so I think you will be fine as you removed it quickly!

Fraaahnces · 01/09/2023 04:18

100% a tick. Creepy little buggers. I’d request some antibiotics. It looks well-fed.

Oblomov23 · 01/09/2023 08:09

Yuk. I had one behind my ear in June from Dorset caravan.

But it does say Lymes disease is rare:

How likely is it to get Lyme disease from a tick?

Since the deer tick that transmits Lyme disease typically feeds for >36 hours before transmission of the spirochete, the risk of acquiring Lyme disease from an observed tick bite, for example, is only 1 to 3 percent, even in an area where the disease is common.
