I’ve just lost sight of the biggest spider ever…

I moved a bag across the floor and saw it run diagonally across the room. I must’ve disturbed it. Only saw it from the corner of my eye but fairly positive it was a spider, given the whole street seems to be having a house spider issue at the moment from talking to my neighbours

It. Was. Huge. 😭 like easily the palm of my hand size. It ran behind the sideboard, which is also near the patio doors. DH looked everywhere and moved the sideboard out, but we can’t find it now anywhere. All he found was a dandelion clock which I’m hoping I could’ve mistaken it for, unlikely though! Please tell me it’ll find its way out the way it came in. I’m so worried about going into that room tomorrow now, we’ve had to leave it and come to bed but spiders honestly make me feel SICK especially when they’re so big and run so fast

I know logically they can’t hurt me but I have serious arachnophobia! It’s stupid but they really do frighten me and make me feel very sick 😂 is it inevitable that we’ll find it or might it just go back out again? Or do we just have to move house? Aghhh

If it was something the size of your hand, its more likely to be a rat.

Thehippowife · 30/08/2023 22:43

This happened to me. I spent the night barricaded in my spare room until my dh came home. It reappeared two weeks later in the kitchen, and was promptly booted out into the garden by brave dh. I have no idea where it hung out for two weeks - it was a monster

How is this supposed to help? It’s a tiny room, we’d have spotted a rat. I know if it was anything it was just a very big spider

Two weeks 🤢 they’re horrid things!! Kudos to your DH, mine did half heartedly look for it but I think deep down he’s a bit uneasy about spiders too.

I feel you, I had one of the same size in my flat last week. It was big enough for me to see it in a fairly dark room running across a dark carpet when I was about to fall asleep 😰 Luckily my DH got it but still I’m uneasy going to bed now…the best solution I can come up with is sealing off the room (towel to close the gap under the door) and get some sleep in another room. Then tomorrow you convince yourself that it has left. Sympathies!

To be honest it was downstairs so I’m less bothered, I’ve just shut the door on it… just awful aren’t they though. I don’t think I’ll dare go in that room tomorrow and unfortunately it’s my office!!! Luckily my laptop is in my work bag (not in that room) so I might give myself permission to work from my bed on this one occasion!!

I’ve posted about my spider encounter last week and was recommended a training to get over my phobia. I think I’ll do that because my reaction to spiders is ridiculous. Makes me physically sick, shaking, sweating etc.

I think it’s really common is it not?

You didn't say you were scared of rats, too.

It's not going to have been a spider the size of your hand.

Raid is your friend here OP. The red ant and cockroach killer one. Get 6 cans and have one on standby in every room. You can hit one 4 m away with a new can. If they touch the stuff they will die. You can spray it around and it will keep killing for 4 weeks. It's probably not very good for you, so just spray around gaps/behind furniture. Ventilate and then relax. It's been a life changer for me. I still dread them, but know that I could tackle one on my own with a can of spray. Before that I had no idea what the feck to do and was frozen to the spot. I spray the house twice a year just before going on holiday. I store things in plastic boxes as they like damp cardboard and fabric most. I have blinds not curtains and I paid a mastic man (a professional gap filler) to come around with his silicone gun and fill in every single gap that he could find. I also got window screens which seems to have helped.

I had a spider bigger than the size of my palm in the house two weeks ago. Giant house spider I'm sure.

OP I find they weirdly are creatures of habit and it will pop up in the same spot tomorrow. Mine always do. Have a pint glass and cardboard ready, or I my case a bucket! Seriously I had yo get the broom to it and I did not want to leave even after a fair few brushes.

Thank you this is very helpful, off to order some! Sounds like a good tool to put minds at ease xx

Are you me? I spotted an absolute unit of a spider on the ceiling the other day. It fell, and I heard it land. My house is a shite hole so cluttered and no way to get to said spider to do the glass/paper trick to get it outside. It hid behind a box, and the only sign I had was the shadow of its legs.
TBH, I don't care as long as it was not in my bedroom.

It’s spider season and that’ll be why so I’m told. Really hope they find their way out through skirting boards or something!

I've just been for a wee and saw a vast dead spider in the toilet bowl. Spiders don't bother me, but this one was so big, I was slightly worried it mightn't flush.

Wonder how it got there! Cos usually they can swim?

Burn the house down. Only way to be sure it's gone. I almost had to do the same.

YouLetDougalDoAFuneral · 30/08/2023 23:50

Ughhh we've had one the same, I'm nowhere near as terrified of them as some people and I'm still feeling itchy thinking about it.

@NeverDropYourMooncup seeing something the size of your hand can absolutely be a big house spider, the one in our house was bigger than DH's palm. My eyesight is horrendous and even I could see it on our curtain without my glasses.

@DyslexicPoster creatures of habit indeed, DH has made me feel even worse tonight by telling me he saw it again trying to come through our front door! Thankfully he's a rural boy who isn't fazed at all, and I've beefed up security by letting our cats roam free around the house rather than shutting them in to sleep.

I wish I could borrow your cats!!

We’ve had so many the last 3 weeks. Giant ones just casually strolling about ? They don’t run ? They don’t need to run, they have confidence and it’s terrifying, they also don’t freeze when you turn a light on or walk towards them they just carry on like they now own my house, they also have children of varying ages that so like the run and keep making me jump, there was even one in the clean mug I got out for my tea this morning !

Mintblueskygreen · 30/08/2023 23:54

*children that do like to run

Mintblueskygreen · 30/08/2023 23:54

Oh and also big green grasshoppers !! We’ve had loads of them too 😳

You need to seek help if it's affecting you like this, as it's restricting your everyday life.

Spiders aren't going anywhere. It's August and we'll have a lot of them right through to about October for the rest of your life.

Time to get professional help OP.

Cinai · 31/08/2023 00:00

Does anyone know when spider season ends? If we manage to make it through September, will we be alright?

I have my own theory about the cause of death, perhaps slightly indelicate for this thread. Suffice it to say that a large human male had previously spent some time locked within the chamber.
