Question for regular Ryanair flyers

Hi all, we are due to fly at the weekend with Ryanair and I’ve bought a new small hard shell suitcase to take. I didn’t double check the size and the tag on it says it’s 55x41x21 as opposed to the 55x40x20 max size for Ryanair.

My question is should I take my old one which is absolutely definitely the correct size or risk taking the one which is 1cm too wide and 1cm too deep? Are they really that strict?

The case will be checked into the hold not taken onto the plane, if that makes a difference.

We will obviously make sure the weight is under the 10kg max.

Any help or info gratefully received! 😊

I wouldn’t say I’m a regular customer although have flown with them quite a few times including last week. I don’t think anyone has ever measured my luggage - it happened to us on easyJet a few months ago but that’s because (my husband) had misread the baggage rules and the wheelie suitcases we were carrying were clearly too big.

I’ve seen those Perspex boxes which people have to put their luggage into to prove that they’re not over-sized but cant remember if they’re only at the gate to measure carry-on luggage or if they’re at the check-in desk too?

I just really don’t want to try and squash my new hard suitcase into a slightly too small box, that will really kill my holiday mood 😂 I’d rather take an old one if there’s any risk of it being found to be oversized.

They will not be measuring checked in luggage
They will only be interested in people trying to take huge bags/cases on board

I often fly RyanAir and never ever have had my luggage measured. It's 1cm over on two sides honestly it'll be fine .

Morechocmorechoc · 30/08/2023 18:46

Fly frequently with them, never had a case checked, always over the size limit

Rossannah · 30/08/2023 18:48

I did exactly this last month, got a bargain from wowcher, wonder if its the same case.
Anyways, they didn't measure it at check in at either end.
All was well

At the airport I was at last week, the Ryanair staff were measuring carry on luggage using one of those measuring box thingies. One couple had to abandon both their small wheely cases at the check in desk and put all their stuff into carrier bags that could be squished into the space.
They were livid.

dementedpixie · 30/08/2023 18:53

But OP isn't taking it on board and it will be put in the hold. You might even have to weigh and tag your own cases to put in the hold; depends on the airport.

MissJoGrant · 30/08/2023 18:56

Ah, right. OP is talking about hold luggage, not carry on. Didn't see hold luggage measured, just weighed, obviously.
