Damaged plastic on new car - KIDS!

First world problems I know...but...

Only had the car 5 months. The middle bit, the plastic bit that holds drinks etc, has somehow got damaged by the kids in the back.

Hard to explain so attached file pic.

I already have seat covers to protect the seats, and covers to protect the back of the front seats.

They're good kids honestly, but one has SEN and I think it's from feet kicking it??

I can't find anything on Amazon mainly because I don't know what to search for. What do you even call the bit in the middle?!

Will put an actual pic of what they've done when DH comes back with the car, but after an hour on Amazon to no avail, thought I would see if anyone else has had the same problem! Also a scratch on the plastic from them trying to plug a charger in and missing the hole. KIDS!!

The plastic thing that holds drinks is called…… a drinks holder!

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 30/08/2023 18:18

I would call it the centre console.

newcarwoes1 · 30/08/2023 18:34

Thank you! Centre Console it is!

Which bit is damaged? The top of the centre console or the body of it or the air vents?

newcarwoes1 · 30/08/2023 19:16

Definitely found a gap in the market..

Lots and lots of centre console padded things to put on top of the bits in the middle..

Zero to protect the back.

I don't actually have an arm rest, just a whole load of cup holders. But the one at the back is the one I need to protect -not the whole thing in the middle..sigh

This is the actual damage..

Spoken to DD, it's not my SEN child, she's had her feet up on it apparently every time she's in the car (she's sat behind me so I can't see that)

I'd emptied the car to start cleaning it out after the summer hols and noticed it straight away.

I think some car plastic specific polish is your best bet or ask a car valet technician for help. Don’t think it’s going to be replaceable or if it is it will cost £££.

newcarwoes1 · 30/08/2023 22:51

I was hoping it could somehow be polished out - but I've asked one valeter on FB and he's just said a polish , can't see how it's going to sort it ?

I need a cover for it to stop it getting worse.

A cover for it is probably going to have to be diy. In which case try a piece of cloth with a small hole cut out of it to get access to the charging point and drape it over the console.
polishing it will make it look better but won’t repair the scuff/scratch marks.

I really wouldn't give it a seconds thought. Par for the course for a car when you have young kids

Same. My son climbed over the back seat in cricket spikes and put three rips in the leather.

I mean this kindly but I'd be tempted to get rid of the covers and turn a blind eye to the normal wear and tear you get with kids. That way, you can enjoy the car in its full glory.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/08/2023 07:30

A car is something useful not a decoration. Assuming you plan to keep it for a long while it is going to get scuffed and marked. Stop worrying about this. It doesn't really matter.

CuriousPorg · 31/08/2023 07:33

I think this is like people who don't take the plastic wrap off their sofa for 10 years. This is normal wear and tear. I think just live with it and accept you can't have nice things until the DC move out.

PatsWoggle · 31/08/2023 07:55

There's a lot of videos online about how to fix the problem.
In future if it bothers you I'd just take the kids shoes off in the car rather than cover everything up.

newcarwoes1 · 31/08/2023 19:08

Sorry I don't think it is normal wear and tear. The car is 5 months old!

Aside from the fact I"m annoys at daughter for doing it, the plastic really shouldn't be that shit that it does this just from having feet put up on it!

My Dad's car is 20 years old, Volvo, and the plastic is his is significantly better.

This is a £20k car fgs.

I think you're being a bit extreme about needing covers and reasonable wear and tear.

I understand you want your car to look nice. I have a Range Rover which is the nicest car I'll own but I've accepted that the kids will scuff the seats and doors in places. Putting on covers would look worse than a bit of wear and tear.

Volvos are indestructible partly as the old ones were made of quite tough plastic (my parents' went on and on). Not necessarily a thing of beauty though (I've had two).
