Brown limescale in toilet bowl

Just moved in and I’ve previously lived in areas without hard water so haven’t had this problem before. The toilet bowl under the water is completely brown and seems like thick limescale. How do I get rid of it!? Bleach just seems to lighten the colour of it temporarily and I’ve also tried some vinegar and baking soda which made no difference either. Please help me- it’s gross!

Another vote for Spirit of Salts - it is absolutely magnificent stuff but keep the room well ventilated while using it!

Harpic black bottle limescale remover and Harpic limescale remover tablets.

Kilrock limescale remover is great - you paint it on like nail varnish.

And make sure you use hot water with the citric acid. Carefully - you don't want to crack the bowl!

I would never advise this. I actually did crack the toilet bowl doing this and had an immediate disaster and had to have a whole new toilet. No plumber could come for 2 weeks though!

Question, as I'm genuinely interested....

I live in a soft water area so don't have this issue.

Can you drink this water? Given limescale builds like this, consuming this water can't be great...or do you filter it before drinking?

@YewTree84 yes you can drink the water. The biggest thing I notice is my hair, if I stay somewhere with soft water within a couple of days my hair is so soft.

Plunge the water out with a toilet brush, then line the bowl with a double layer of kitchen roll. Pour in a couple of bottles of cheap white vinegar, ensuring that the kitchen roll is also soaked and leave overnight.
The next morning, remove the kitchen roll, give the loo a quick scrub with the brush and flush. The scale should flush away.
It always worked for me.

^^ This. White vinegar works an absolute treat.

Kilrock descaler works brilliantly. Put a load in followed by a kettle of hot water and leave as long as possible (longer than the instructions) then it flakes off with a toilet brush.

Can get it from Amazon
