How much do you pay for private medical insurance? (If aged 40-45)

DH and I are both on 18 month+ NHS waiting lists. Thankfully not for anything too serious, but it’s got me wondering. Eventually, one if not both of us will get cancer. Or something else horrifying.

I’m wondering what is a ballpark figure to pay for private insurance?

Neither of us work in industries where we could get it through work, sadly.

I pay £67 per month for the top Bupa cover. This also covers my dc. No pre existing conditions so you'd need to declare those which may increase the cost.

I have recently used it for my dc (dermatology) and the service was brilliant.

My underwriting has me paying £99p/m @ 45
DH £67 a month at 45 y/o

I have family history that increases mine by a fair amount as I’ve had investigations for said issue on the NHS for it, but nothing found, thankfully.

I wouldn’t mind by I’m at the gym 5 days a week, eat fairly healthy. DH walks the dog and that’s it and does not really care about what he eats. Not that it affects premiums, but it irks me.

You’ll probably get exclusions on anything you are waiting for treatment for. Although some ins co.s will remove the exclusion after a few years of no issues with that particular problem.

I see people recommend Beneden as an alternative quite a lot, but I’ve no experience of it personally.

It is really worth shopping around and looking at the cost reduction a higher excess may give.

It’s gone up a fair amount this time, when I questioned them, they said it was due to the increase costs of providing the insurance service due to all costs increasing in general.

Yikes that is so expensive! Gosh I had really hoped it would be lower.

Benenden doesn’t cover cancer, sadly.

I pay €65 to cover my 3 children and husband (I am free through work). Pretty good value I think

Seriously? We are one step down from the top cover. Very few, not expensive claims over 25+yrs, early 50s and pay nearly £400 a month for 2 adults?? No pre-existing conditions because we've been with them since young.

£400/month for two adults?! 😳

We have separate dental and optical cover too with Simply Health.

I see all these people who claim to have top level cover for as little as £65ish and wonder how on earth. We are covered for cancer with Bupa, we don't have to pay upfront and reclaim. It's difficult to change as we will have preexisting conditions.

Simply Health is worth a look, they do other policies and ate very easy to deal with.

Bit younger (I'm 37 and DH is 38) but we pay £87 a month for us and two young DC including full cancer cover with Axa.

Clefable · 30/08/2023 13:32

But yes it will rise steeply with age so I wouldn't be surprised at cover of a couple of hundred pounds a month or more as you get into your 50s and 60s.

I don’t suppose there’s any life insurance benefits included with this?

Also do you pay a fixed price for ever or does it go up as you age?

£58 per month. Family of 4. No dental.

It's like car insurance. Renews every year or you can shop around. Price increases each year.

If you get new medical conditions you might need to stay with the same insurer to have them covered.

Clefable · 30/08/2023 18:00

@NCforthistooo No we have life insurance separately. That is a fixed sum for duration of policy but medical insurance will go up as you age.

FawnFrenchieMum · 30/08/2023 18:04

Wow, some of these prices seem incredibly cheap. I pay not far off this as a benefit in kind tax for my company policy

Bunlass · 30/08/2023 18:13

I have Bupa cover through work, I pay extra for my husband 50, includes cancer cover -£67 a month
