A very common meal that you've never cooked yourself?

It occurred to me today that as much as I love fish pie, I've never actually cooked one myself despite being a capable cook! I've always eaten it at restaurants/ had my mum make it for me when I was younger etc.

What's a common meal you like but have never cooked yourself?

I've never really felt good about my cooking, and I'm Def a cook not a chef but actually this thread has cheered me up. Nothing I like that I haven't cooked I don't think.

Few things like fresh fish, lobster, fish pie I've never cooked but then again I wouldn't order them in a restaurant.

I can't convert food tho. My friend made beef brisket then turned the left overs into the most amazing soup (beefy french onion soup) all without a recipe. I can't do that.

Oh actually soup. I've never intentionally made soup. Everyone praises my butternut squash soup but it was meant to be thicker like a stew

I think making a rue (sp?) is the faff, adding the milk slowly and stirring and hoping it won't go lumpy. Then chopping all the veg up for the sauce. Browning the meat and then combining everything then whatever you're doing for the top. I made it for 80 a few months ago, vegan, veg and meat but it is DEF a faff

Re toad in the hole, sausage in the dish you're gonna us cooked to 75%, drain most but not all the fat then add the batter

I make lasagne regularly and don’t do any of that! Cheese sauce made using all in one method. Chuck it all in together and keep stirring. The only veg that needs chopping is onion. I don’t brown the meat separately, just soften the onions then add the meat, then everything else. I think you’re making it more faff than it needs to be!

Roux 😉

I don't add it slowly, bung it all in and stir vigorously and if you want to make a cheese sauce then just bung in cubes of cheese, don't bother grating.

Thanks, I KNEW it was wrong but I just couldn't work it out

Edited

Mine goes lumpy if I do that. I had an amazing capacity to make stuff lumpy.

Re chopping. There's a lack of mushroom in 😬😬

Macaroni cheese

GarlicGrace · 29/08/2023 18:42

Sausage casserole. Can't see the point.
Quiche, because I've never liked them enough to make the effort.
Agree that ready-made lasagna's good enough, so why bother?
I do make fabulous fish pies, though!

DinnaeFashYersel · 29/08/2023 18:44

I've never made roast lamb or pork

Tuna pasta bake 😱

I used to loved the ones with spiral (fusilli?) pasta that we had at school, so much cheese on the top. They did them with bacon instead of tuna as well. Always loads of onion in both.

Anyone got a good recipe?

Katmai · 29/08/2023 18:57

Cauliflower cheese. DH's one is great, so I've never bothered.

Fairgrove · 29/08/2023 18:58

OP, I like Jamie Oliver's fish pie that uses creme fraiche and grated veg. It's easy too.

irregularegular · 29/08/2023 19:01

I don't think I've ever done roast beef! Roast chicken quite often, roast lamb and pork somtimes, but never beef!

I think it's partly because 1) it needs yorkshire pudding, which I have also never done 2) it's expensive!!! and I think needs to be cooked just right otherwise it would be a waste 3) I prefer lamb anyway, or slow roast pork, unless the beef is really, really good!

I make fish pie fairly regularly!

MadNads · 29/08/2023 19:05

Lasgane, cheese cake, carbonara, pizza, quiche, cheese on toast, or anything else with cheese as it's disgusting 🤮 I've never made anything for anyone else that includes cheese either

onwardandupwards · 29/08/2023 19:06

Poached egg, just cannot get the hang of them! 😂

LondonJax · 29/08/2023 19:06

You won't get lumpy sauce for a lasagne if you swap normal flour for corn flour and drop the butter.

Just heat the milk in a saucepan, mix cornflour in a little COLD water in a separate bowl or jug (you only need a few teaspoons of cornflour depending on how thick you want the sauce), then add it to the hot milk stirring all the time as you bring it to a gentle boil.

I tend to add it bit by bit to the milk so I get the consistency I want. Then add salt/pepper and cheese if you want it. I tend to sprinkle the cheese over the sauce in each layer but it's your lasagne so it's up to you!

Good thing about it is that you don't have to have two saucepans on the go - one for the roux and one for the milk - as the cornflour mix is added to the hot milk.

I use cornflour in anything that needs a thicker texture sauce - casseroles, bolognese or chilli if I've overdone the liquid and can't be bothered to reduce it down.

MadNads · 29/08/2023 19:06

Also macaroni cheese, cheese sauce, moussaka, Brie and stilton soup... the list is quite long Grin

Chichz · 29/08/2023 19:11

I can never get roux quite right either. I do love making a lasagne but I use crème fraiche (sp also?!) for the sauce and fresh egg pasta lasagne sheets. Pretty much a one-pot wonder!

I only make pie with ready-roll pastry, all-butter of course! I do need to step up my flour product game but that's more DH's domain...

Egg fried rice

Oh you should, I only made it for the first time 2 years ago but make it regularly now because it's so easy! (I do cheat most of the time and use packet rice so I don't need to cook then cool rice).

KohlaParasaurus · 29/08/2023 19:14

I've never cooked and served mussels or a lobster at home, but if they're on a restaurant menu they're what I'd choose.

LBOCS2 · 29/08/2023 19:14

I've never made a stir fry as a) I'm not that fussed about them, and b) DH does one of the best examples of a home stir fry I've eaten, so when we do have them (rarely) it's his job.

I quite enjoy making fish pie and lasagne though :)

SilverSpooooons · 29/08/2023 19:15

Jacket potatoes. Mainly because I don't like them.
