My parents (60s) are looking to relocate to the south of England to be closer to us.

Their rough requirements:

  • within 1 hour drive from north London (ideally 30 mins)
  • safe town, nice local walks, good rail links to London
  • budget of £500-550k
  • 3/4 bed with garden
  • ideally semi-detached
  • ideally some East Asian presence/shops (as they are EA)

Schools are not a factor obv.

I have explored the likes of Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, Hitchin. They initially suggested Luton but it looks a bit rough to me? (I really apologise if that’s not so.)

Thank you!

Actually with the mention of Dunstable- Leighton buzzard might be a really good bet. Closeish to Dunstable too. Traditional market town, not really exciting but mixed community, not as far as Milton K, very well connected and cheaper than berkhamsted /Tring

Here's what you can get - all look good to me for the budget available.

The drive to Milton Keynes is simple as just M1 really until the a1 at the bottom to Finchley. But you quite often hit traffic around Luton. And also MK is a bit soulless. But fine.

Hunsdon is a lovely village but no train and not multi cultural at all. Any of those villages around Harlow/ware/hertford are nice but £££ and can be a bit isolated.

But if village life is it I would look at Essendon for proximity to Finchley. Or Brookmans park but you would be hard pressed to get more than a flat for the budget.

Knebworth, old Welwyn, woolmer Green all worth a look too.

Bishops Stortford. Harlow is nearby for Asian shops but it isn’t that nice to live in. Bishops Stortford is close by but nicer. Sawbridgeworth is ok too. Saffron Walden is lovely but your budget won’t go far for houses there and you’d have to go to Harlow or Cambridge for Asian shops.

Yes I would suggest these areas too. But £500k won't stretch far... just over the border in Suffolk you may be luckier finding a big enough house. Cambridge is excellent for Chinese grocery stores, and is easy to get to London by train and has addenbrokes hospital.
