Are people still nervous about covid?

Have been away over the bank holiday weekend, stayed in a busy hotel in a major city. We were about to go into the lift, when a couple wouldn't let us in because they said 'we are very covid conscious'! They weren't wearing masks for context.

I see the odd person still mask wearing usually under their chin but am I naive in thinking most people are living without fear of dying of covid, or barricading themselves in lifts?

@GlmPmum very much agree...I can't imagine going to Leeds Festival if I was worried about covid! It's hard enough washing your hands in those portaloos Grin.

I would have got in the lift anyway. If they were that worried they wouldn't have even been in the lift

Really? Seems a bit unnecessarily mean, assuming you weren’t in a major rush. Would it have been that big a deal to just wait for the next one?

CurlewKate · 28/08/2023 21:39

I'm not nervous. But I am aware and careful. Mostly on other people's behalf rather than mine.I still take care around the vulnerable.

Just checked and where we were had less than 3 covid cases identified in the last 7 days. I think it's safe to say we weren't in a hotspot 😂

I'm fairly worried, tbh. I had post-viral fatigue 8 years ago, and had to drop out of my Master's course, and although I eventually made a full recovery, I know that this puts me at higher risk of long covid and the thought of being stuck like that forever is terrifying.

Lovemusic82 · 28/08/2023 21:45

I know someone who still very cautious, they won’t touch a supermarket trolly/basket, still wear a mask and avoids busy areas (they barely go out tbh), they are not vulnerable just very worried about getting ill.

I’m currently recovering from the new variant, I have had covid a few times but this time has been the worst. I know quite a few people that have it at the moment, it seems to be rife here. I can see why vulnerable people maybe extra cautious.

SayNoToDoorToDoor · 28/08/2023 21:47

I’ve just caught covid again. I don’t go out much because I’m immuno suppressed but turns out there were people with covid at the hobby I do. Just a cold they said.

I’ve had to cancel the holiday I’ve scrimped and saved for because my gp said no, too much risk. Insurance said provisionally I’ll get my money back so I’m hoping there’s no tricky get put clauses.

It’s turned my life upside down and not in a good way. Let them have the lift.

Peony654 · 28/08/2023 21:51

If they have chosen to go to a city hotel that’s ridiculous. I would have got in anyway. Can’t believe anyone still tests or even thinks about Covid.

Borough · 28/08/2023 21:51

I'm not worried about it but I'm happy to do small things to accommodate people who are. Waiting for the next lift is a small thing, imo.

I do see people wearing masks every now and again still and I figure they've either got something they don't want to pass on or they're worried about catching a virus due to existing health issues, but either way it's up to them.

ManchesterLu · 28/08/2023 21:52

I think I'd have said well you're welcome to wait for the next lift, and got in anyway.

I 100% agree that you should keep yourself away from people if you have obvious symptoms of ANY contagious illness, and practice good hygiene/hand washing as standard.. but keeping distance like that from people on a daily basis just isn't necessary (and never was!)

NoEffingWay · 28/08/2023 21:53

Oh, I didn't say anything and let them have the lift etc, but did think they would need an oxygen tank and breathing apparatus if they were trying to avoid other people's respiratory output!

Most people have no choice but to live with it ,,they are expected to work etc woth it
There are some entitled individuals who becsuse they have always had the luxury of working, from home etc, think that everyone, should stay home with covid but, generally i think most people have to get on with it.

ConnieTucker · 28/08/2023 22:01

I woke up achey today at lunch time. Yep, covid. I feel dreadful.

Hbh17 · 28/08/2023 22:05

I was never, ever nervous about it - there was way too much fuss right from the start - so so I'm hardly likely to get nervous now! My strongest emotions were frustration and anger at all of the unnecessary restrictions.

Greenshake · 28/08/2023 20:46

Just my tuppence worth, but I think the couple in the lift were being overly cautious.

Not if both or one of them is cev.
I have cancer. if I have to mix with other people I wear a mask. Not just to avoid covid, but other viruses too.

User1324593 · 28/08/2023 22:07

We stayed at massive family resort hotel this summer and the dining room was packed every mealtime with 100+ people (30% kids) in a small indoor space with an open buffet.

The most curious sight was a single family who wore masks everywhere (just those flimsy blue surgical ones, not N95). However they did take them off to eat while in the same room as everyone else. Which begs the question, if they were genuinely concerned about covid, or attempting to shield a vulnerable family member, why even book a holiday in a hotel where there will be hundreds of people plus children?! Why not choose a smaller hotel or self-catering AirBnB? Very odd, still can't get my head around it.

NoEffingWay · 28/08/2023 22:12

@Flopsythebunny If they had been wearing masks, and properly at that, I would have assumed CEV or similar, but nothing on or visible to grab when meeting the public (completely unavoidable in this hotel). I was a bit baffled by the public lift ownership tbh

OP posts:
NoEffingWay · 28/08/2023 22:13

On the way home, there was one person wearing a mask in the services, an N95, which covered the necessary mouth and nose. All I thought was 'personal choice', and didn't even wonder why.

BCBird · 28/08/2023 22:16

I am still cautious. Believe u me the while lockdown and legacy of it is not a source of dramatic pleasure. I wear a mask when in enclosed places and carefully choose when and where I go.

"I honestly think some people just can't let go of the drama/excitement of the whole situation and will do anything to keep it going."

For goodness sake. Many of us have families with vulnerable members.

Did you read my whole post?

Nobody gets to take ownership of a public lift.

They should step out and wait or use the stairs, not dictate who can and cannot get in.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 28/08/2023 22:27

I couldn’t give a shit about it, despite recent media attempts to try and scare us all again about “new variants”, new waves, and other suchlike which is going to be how life is now with an extra infectious illness in the mix.

It is what it is and not going anywhere , I’ve had 4 vaccines and 2 infections, If I’m unwell I’ll not go out, back to pre 2020 common sense for me. I’ve seen a handful of people wearing masks recently. Each to their own.

gamerchick · 28/08/2023 22:30

I'm not in fear of dying but this new strain going around seems to come on as fast as flu and is knocking people on their arses who haven't had it yet. As I haven't. But the tests are picking it up. I'm not taking extra precautions like. If it happens it happens.

But 'most' people getting covid won't be on an official list will they? Because mass testing doesn't exist anymore.
I've just had it and it was really nasty. I haven't registered that I've had it with my dr and I suspect most people don't do the numbers will be a lot higher than is being reported.
