DH & I are having a mini break to London this weekend but we’re on a budget. Any recommendations for reasonably priced restaurants or pubs near those two theatres? We don’t want anything fancy but are after good quality if poss.

I always have pre-theatre meals at Le Garrick.

@grass321 we actually prefer the Ivy Cafes over the original Ivy 😳 mainly because they’re easier to get to, for us, and you can get a table within less than six weeks’ notice. Always a problem with just the one Ivy, unless you were Joan Collins et al 😆
We’ve only been to the ones in City Garden, Richmond, and Winchester, but I think the menus are the same as the ‘original’ and the food, atmosphere and service is as good as the original.

Agree! Have eaten at the original ivy numerous times. Now live in the north and the branches of the Ivy cafe in leeds and York, as well as a couple in London , have almost the same menu. Found it to be done just as well, great service and a lovely atmosphere. Decent price point for what you get

If you'd like a quiet drink, the terrace at the top of the Royal Opera House is open to the public. (Only discovered this recently on a tour).

Nice place to have a glass of wine overlooking Covent Garden and watch the world go by.

They also do small plates if you don't want a heavy meal; a friend and I had wine and food there last week and it was lovely.

Sticks and sushi in Covent Garden is very nice and a bit different, if you like sushi. Cote is a decent chain (much better than The Ivy cafes IMO, which seem to be a bit all and nothing) and does a good pre theatre menu. Brasserie Zedel is fabulous and worth a visit on its own.

Georgie8 I remember the old Joe Allen, it was amazing, almost the only "diner" style place around. I did know about the secret burger too. I love the Delaunay but it has got very expensive.

@Davros well do try the new one -it’s almost as hidden as the original and they have all the old posters and signed photos.
It’s not the same, mainly because of the lay out, and I doubt you’d bump into the stars anymore in the same way, but we were thrilled to go back 🙂
We took our youngest before going to the theatre, caught up with an old friend who we used met every month for brunch in the 90s, and took friends over from NZ.

@user1494050295 We’ve not tried Cafe Murano, only the Murano in Mayfair, but I believe Angela Hartnett would insist on high standards, so would recommend.

The Cinnamon Bazaar is good (a scion of the Cinnamon Club 😋) in Maiden Lane, if you like modern Indian food.

We saw Barbra Windsor in there once and many others I can't remember now. I'm talking 30 or so years ago (old gimmer)
