That's it really.
Looking at improving my diet and doing more strength work in the gym, advised I need to increase protein
Any ideas or advice welcome

I think @ShewontShecantShesLeft means if you are eating enough with a balanced diet

Then that's what @SheWontSheCantShesLeft needs to say. It's very misleading to say that enough kcal=enough protein, without any qualification. Especially when OP is asking about nutrition and needs clear advice. Basically, she's saying that if you're getting enough protein, you're getting enough protein. Genius.

Nuts aren't too bad. Eaten as they are (not ground) they are 1/3 lower in calories than previously thought. They're probably more healthy than protein powder.

The low fat babybel are good for snacking on. Don't taste as great as the full fat ones though 😜

There's so much more products now that have high protein. We purchased high protein tortilla wraps last week from Aldi.

How do they add the protein? I'm suspicious of anything that has to be artificially proteined. It's not necessary.

As a couple of previous posters explained, almost everyone with a standard UK diet - I.e. not very unusally restrictive in calories or extremely restricted in food types will be getting more protein than needed. Excess protein is stored as fat (as are excess carbs) -so there is no benefit to more protein versus more carbs versus more fat for the same calories.

If you are doing a lot of aerobic exercise then you can use up all your carbs - hence glucose gels etc for long distance runners. You will not use up all your protein.

If you’re eating a broadly balanced diet, you are eating enough protein. There’s protein in almost all food. Without trying, most people’s diet is 16-18% protein. As long as you aren’t severely calorie restricting, you’re getting enough protein. Sure, if you eat only chips, or only rice, or only biscuits, you would be deficient in protein. But then you’d be deficient in lots of other things too.

Your body can’t store excess protein. It just takes the nitrogen out of it and turns it into carbs and fat.

Fage yoghurt
Iceland tuna steaks
chicken breasts
vanilla protein powder

plus lots of vegetables excluding white starch!

I mean maybe I should have started a thread about massive salads or tips on how to be teeny tiny
They seem well received on here

Yes, @SheWontSheCantShesLeft , I know that if you eat a balanced diet you'll get enough protein. You're saying 'Don't listen to your professionally trained personal trainer, just eat a balanced diet!' and then saying that PT's are handing out rubbish advice on food.

PTs are telling people to get a balanced diet, and to eat more protein if you're trying to build muscle. That's good advice, and it sounds like what OP's PT has told her.

You're replying to a 'How do I have a balanced diet?' with a poorly worded and ill-supported version of 'Just have a balanced diet, and don't get it wrong!' It's not helpful and shows many knowledge gaps.

Oh dear, Hobnobs Grin

Some things I'd suggest; first, for breakfast:

  • Greek yoghurt - go for the low/no fat ones, as they are higher in protein
  • anything with eggs; scrambled eggs with cheese will add even more protein
  • bacon/sausages (although beware, as these are pretty highly processed)

For lunch, avoid the sandwich and have something like tuna/ham/hard-boiled eggs/cheese with salad

And for dinner, again, some form of protein (meat/fish/eggs) with veg/pulses.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 28/08/2023 20:59

@BIWI I should know by now what this place is like 😂😂😂😂

I think those are the tweaks I need to make.
Hopefully fuller for longer and less snacking and more energy..

Mine isn't perfect but I get a fair bit of protein

Breakfast - smoothie - frozen berries, kefir, bit of milk, protein powder

Lunch - some form of eggs/tuna sandwich or wrap, protein pudding or Greek yoghurt and banana

Tea - some form of chicken/mince meal usually batch cooked

Snack - handful nuts, babybel, some cooked chicken, cottage cheese on a rice cake
