Adult dd has long thick hair but suffers with psoriasis of the scalp. This is usually small red scabs on the scalp and flakiness . She said this is quite painful sometimes. She has tried several shampoos for dry itchy scalp but had no relief . Does anyone have any recommendations?

Body shop ginger

I don't know if it's parasis but we used an over the counterfeit boots own special dandruff shampoo, you use it then reduce the use and that worked.

Different things seem to work better for different people so it's largely trial and error unfortunately

Only think that works for me is body shop ginger. I also do a coconut oil treatment overnight fairly regularly as a ‘reset’

WhispersOfWickedness · 28/08/2023 12:15

Another vote for Body Shop Ginger shampoo. No idea how it works but it does 🤷‍♀️

FanSpamTastic · 28/08/2023 12:25

I found the Neutrogena T-Gel therapeutic shampoo helped - the one with coal tar (sounds awful but v soothing!).

Richvanilla · 28/08/2023 12:31

Yes another vote for the body shop ginger range - honestly it's not my favourite shampoo as I find my hair gets greasy quickly and the conditioner isn't as nourishing as other brands but it is the only thing thag stops my head breaking out in red itchy burny patches followed by massive patches of flakiness

Silverstar2 · 28/08/2023 12:36

Very much trial and error. Body Shop ginger shampoo is AWFUL for me, made it a lot worse.

Anything with Selenium is good but impossible to find at times as every time you discover one that works it gets discontinued. Now I just live with the soreness because I cannot keep wasting money on things that claim to work but don't or do work but get taken off the shelves. Sorry, I am disillusioned! Good luck.

Symphony830 · 28/08/2023 12:38

Also another vote for the Neutrogena and the ginger shampoo.

Ive not had psoriasis on my scalp for a long time since I was prescribed Enstillar foam. No treatment worked for me other than this foam. If I get a patch now the foam shifts it very quickly.

Go to the doctor and get betacap scalp application or similar. It's for short term use but it actually works.

They're not allowed to make products using medically effective levels of tar any more, that's why the reformulated Polytar no longer works.

You wouldn't treat any other medical ailment by washing it so why does psoriasis get the short straw?

RuffledKestrel · 28/08/2023 12:41

Anything without sodium lauryl sulfate in it works for me.

CoveredWindows · 28/08/2023 12:42

The only thing that works for me is Betacap scalp treatment. You need a prescription but can buy online at sites like Uk meds by answering the questions. None of the shampoos do anything for me

MorrisZapp · 28/08/2023 12:42

In Scotland, a prescribing pharmacist can give you betacap, but they will need to examine your scalp.

If she's in a hard water area it might help to get a water softener installed. I noticed a big difference from this.

Thank you for all your responses. Some great suggestions so thank you.

I have suffered with this for a long time & various things work then stop because my scalp gets used to them. My best advice would be a scalp massaging brush. Use every time hair is washed. It's very good. Something like this.

Alpecin dandruff killer - it works from the first wash.
Only need to use it about once a week afterwards (can use other shampoos in between)
I bought it from Amazon.

SeriousFaffing · 28/08/2023 23:37

Exorex shampoo and the cream ointment (another coal tar one). The relief it gives is wonderful.

Squiblet · 28/08/2023 23:47

Coal tar treatments never worked for me, but Capasal shampoo has made a big difference. Must be bought at a chemist's from behind the counter - doesn't need a prescription.

SpunkyGibbon · 29/08/2023 02:46

Agree with @luckylavender and buy a wet hair brush too

peeeter · 20/03/2024 13:46

I understand you so well. I have dealed with the some problem some years ago.

It started off as annoying itchy spots on my head that just wouldn't go away with regular shampoos. Sometimes, it got so bad that I felt really embarrassed. By luck, I found this helpful website, https://www.poweryourcurls.com/scalp-psoriasis/, and it really changed things for me. They talked about using special shampoos and creams that have stuff like Ketoconazole and Clobetasol in them, which help calm down the itchiness and flakiness. But what really made a big difference for me was following their advice on lifestyle changes. Eating better, taking fish oil supplements, washing my hair less often with very gentle shampoos, and avoiding using a hairdryer or doing any harsh treatments to my hair helped a lot. Plus, doing things to lower my stress, like yoga and spending time outdoors, really helped my scalp feel better.
