Things to do near St Andrews

We (me, dp and ds2 aged 16) are staying in Anstruther for a few days. Obviously going to spend time in St Andrews and walk along the coast but wondered if anyone had any other recommendations of places to visit or nice walks. I’ve seen there are a few NT properties locally but we’ve got a doggo coming along too and they aren’t all canine friendly. Any ideas would be really helpful !

The costal walk is lovely. Anstruther is quite central so you could go towards Crail in one direction or Elie in the other

There's Scotlands Secret Bunker which is near Anstruther & worth a visit.

Kellie Castle has great grounds for a walk & a nice coffee shop

Dundee is interesting, Falkland Palace if it is still open. You could climb the Lomonds behind Glen Rothes. Craigton Park is nice for kids, I’m talking Summer, not sure when things close.
Stirling is close, it has a castle. The beaches of Tentsmuir are beautiful for a walk. Cupar has Fisher and Donaldson for the best cakes on the planet.. and you can climb The Hill of Tarvitt.
There is a little shop on the harbour at Pittenweem which does seriously good ice cream and fudge, tablet etc.

But if you are buying tablet, don’t waste too much money as Mrs Tilley’s from Tesco is as good as the expensive stuff. Have a lovely time, I love Fife.

There is a shooting range at Tentsmuir which our teenagers and we loved.
Also really loved land yachts on West Sands. www.blownaway.co.uk

Cellardyke is my home town, can't think of anything exciting to do for teens tbh.

A walk along to caiplie caves can be nice if the weather's decent, good for the dog too.

there used to be an outdoors place along by cellardyke harbour, had kayaking, abseiling.

tentsmuir is one of my favourite places ever, the beach is amazing.

Agree the coastal walk is lovely - either to Crail or Elie (there's a bus that runs the length of the coastline so could walk one way and get the bus back).

St Andrews lovely for a potter around, there's a walk that loops around and through the golf course.

In St Andrews - Toppings book store for a mooch, Fisher & Donaldson for takeaway cakes, Janettas for ice cream. Visit Balgove Larder on outskirts of St Andrew - lovely farm shop, pizza box to sit outside and have some tasty pizza, cafe, restaurant.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 28/08/2023 09:36

Oh, we did ace throwing with these guys, but they do other outdoors stuff too eastneukoutdoors.co.uk

DeathStarCanteenGal · 28/08/2023 09:38

you're not that far from Dundee - could do a trip to the V&A
Fisher and Donaldsonalso have a shop there, for more fudge doughnuts

Bornafreak · 28/08/2023 09:42

There is also the Scottish deer centre https://scottishdeercentre.co.uk/ which is near Cupar and are operating a pay as you please which means just pay as much as you wish.

The Himalayas putting green in St Andrews is fun for all ages. Right beside the main golf courses.

DinnaeFashYersel · 28/08/2023 09:48

Wild Shore Dundee www.wildshoredundee.co.uk would be excellent for kids of those ages and visit the Discovery Ship whilst in Dundee

Secret Bunker

Fish and chips in anstruther

Falkland and the palace

Quite a few other Outlander sites up there if you like that

Another good one for the kids if they are outdoorsy is eastneukoutdoors.co.uk

NotMadeOfStone · 28/08/2023 09:53

There's a lovely tidal pool at Pittenweem for wild swimming.

If you feel like going a wee bit further head to Dundee? The V&A is good for a wander, and the RRS Discovery is next to it. You could do both of those in half a day, get some lunch.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 28/08/2023 11:00

Thanks ! Fancy the Himalayan putting green.

"Fisher & Donaldson - outstanding fudge doughnuts"

I have a degree entirely built on Fisher and Donaldson fudge doughnuts.

CurlewKate · 28/08/2023 11:18

Also fish and chips from Pete's-sadly long gone!

These donuts are a must.

Don't go get to ask for 'chippy sauce, on your chips and the chip shop.

Chemenger · 28/08/2023 11:43

DH swears by a Fisher and Donaldson Coffee Tower. I'm very fond of their meringues (and the fudge donuts, needless to say).

NotMadeOfStone · 28/08/2023 12:40

What's chippy sauce @DinnaeFashYersel
