Travel Prams - is it worth going for cabin carry on?

We are currently looking to get a light easy stroller for our first holiday away with DD (15 months) soon - ideally one hand fold and definitely lightweight but it equally needs a canopy and a carry tray if poss…
Lots sell themselves as being cabin luggage sized which sounds great but I can’t actually see how it would be very useful. Most airlines seem to allow you to take a pushchair to the aircraft steps/doors before it is taken to be put in the hold anyway so surely this just means an extra item to worry about lugging down the aisle..!?
If anyone has traveled with one and saw huge benefits would love to know - equally if anyone has recommendations for a good travel stroller!
TIA 😊

Who are you flying with? We have a bugaboo butterfly which I absolutely love. Ba let us put it overhead, Ryanair made us stow it under which was so annoying because we only had hand luggage and had to wait an hour for it to come off the plane... on the way back my daughter wasn't well and a steward did actually get it off the plane early but that was a lot of hassle

@faban Ah that’s a good point about if we are only going with hand luggage!
We are going Ryan Air this time but will be taking a couple of cases to go in the hold so will have to wait anyway but I can see that that would be super frustrating otherwise!

It's so useful the other end. It was a mammoth walk from the plane to the baggage area and no way my toddler would have been able to walk it. We also wouldn't have been able to carry him, as we had baby and 3 hand luggages to carry.

I’ve flown many many times with babies and toddlers, never with a buggy in the cabin.

It’s always been fine - if they’re little they can go in a carrier at the other end, if they’re bigger then they’ll probably want a walk once you land! Some airports also lend you one until reclaim.

Im sure they’re handy if you have one, but it’s not something I’d buy specially.

I can see it's slightly useful when flying but it's totally fine without and all the cabin bag sized ones are rubbish on the beach or bumpy footpaths with their teeny tiny wheels. Depends what kind of holidays you are taking!

SpruceMoose · 27/08/2023 19:38

We have a GB Pockit+. It's really handy, easy to fold but also has decent wheels for uneven surfaces. It can have different positions for laying down/sitting up etc.

LoveBluey · 27/08/2023 20:03

The advantage would be at the other end as it can be a fair walk from the plane to baggage reclaim. However there's no guarantee you can stow it on board, if there's not space they could still ask you to put it in the hold so I probably wouldn't buy one especially.

Ryanair won’t let you take it on the plane, but they’re so worth buying anyway. We got a Bugaboo Butterfly and use it far more than our normal pushchair now. It’s a godsend just day to day, but especially on holiday if you’re using public transport or going on boat rides, etc. even just going in cafes, life is so much easier with a pushchair that folds so small you can shove it under the table.

Thank you so much everyone - really helpful!
I had seen the bugaboo butterfly and they look lovely but am loathe to buy another expensive pram when we already have 2 😅 I’ll have a little look for a second hand one or similar and if we end up with one that can’t go in the hold we can look at Trunkis when she gets big enough to want to go from plane to baggage claim under her own steam!

Have a lovely holiday, hope Ryanair are not too unreasonable, though please don't support the bully Mr O'Leary again.

I personally don't think they're worth the extra money and a lightweight stroller in the hold is all you need. When we took DS1 away when he was a baby, we kept the pram up until we walked up the stairs onto the plane and they had it waiting at the bottom of the stairs when we got off the plane (got all prams out the hold ready for passengers getting off - jet2 - so wouldn't have been worth it at all). When we went this year with DS2, again kept the pram until boarding then got it back at baggage reclaim but took baby carrier to keep him in until then. There was 1 family on our flight with a pram in the overhead storage, but it was still bulky to carry on the plane and honestly it looked like they were struggling to carry 2 x carry on rucksacks, the baby and the big pram bag! So imo I'd recommend regular stroller and a light carrier rather than a pricier carry on buggy Smile
