I might be being totally unreasonable, but hey.
We live on a new build estate and some children play out on scooters, bikes and skateboards which is lovely to see.
Most of them are late primary school (in my opinion absolutely fine at that age!) but there is one who we know to be 6 as their mum has posted on the community group before ‘my 6 year old is having a garden sale to make some pocket money’ and another that (looks) around 4 or 5.
The 6 year old in particular appears to have zero sense of road safety and is up and down the estate on their bike. No helmet. At the top of the estate there is a main road, the limit is 30 but most drivers do more. It’s difficult to cross as a pedestrian, visibility is quite poor due to a blind bend. Usually you’re waiting a good while for a gap to pull out. You get the idea.
I have witnessed other cars on the estate have to slam on the brakes even at slow speed as they appear out of nowhere.
I’m finding it hard not to judge in this situation and worry for the children. I imagine when we have a child of that age I would be too worried to let them be unsupervised, for many reasons: risk of the main road, abduction, getting injured and not knowing what to do. Too many variables for the sake of just supervising, or making sure they play directly outside your front window. The family in question with the 6 year old live several streets behind where they are playing, and for whatever reason the kids choose to play closer to the junction of the main road.
I think possibly a 10 year old with their wits about them and a mobile for emergencies would be ok? I know I’m being a nosey neighbour but I really fear it’s an accident waiting to happen.
