Proof of allergy for school - but I don’t have proof ?!

What do I do ? The school need proof but the waiting list for allergy testing is months.

we are sure ds has a cows milk allergy but as we are waiting for tests we don’t have proof, so that also means they can’t give antihistamine as it’s not prescribed we just buy it as the gp can’t prescribe till the allergy tests are done !

What do people do in this situation ?

It's quite unusual to get to school age and only have a suspected allergy. Has she ever had a reaction from being touched by someone who has handled dairy ?

Do it. Seriously, do it, as they cannot ignore that - it's something they cannot argue with in terms of providing food, just like they have to take into account the dietary requirements of a Hindu, Muslim, 7th Day Adventist or Jewish child.

And if DS is older/in Secondary, I'd suggest he carries anti histamines in his bag or blazer pocket.

However, catering companies are allowed a small amount of milk etc in foods labelled "vegan". My friend who organises events for a uni has told us this for a while (DH has milk and egg allergies) and he has had mild reactions to some vegan foods.

For a school catering company, they're likely to prepare vegan foods as though they were allergen requirements because it's cheaper than risking the vegan with allergies kids getting the one that looks identical but has sat on the same counter or been prepared in the machine that had dairy products in it previously.

All catered foods can be contaminated, though - it's why I don't eat at work. I get glutened enough from gluten free food as it is, I don't need to add the extra risk to my work day.

@Cowsmilkallergy just as a modicum of reassurance (though I certainly agree you should ask the GP for a letter) (nearly) all schools will administer antihistamine to any child that is having an allergic reaction - they have an emergency bottle in school and to have to sign a permission form for this on starting. Make sure you have the allergic listed on his medical forms even without 'proof' and mention it to his class teacher when he starts so they will be even quicker to administer it if needed.
