Please help a non girly girl put her hair in a bun!

Please don’t think I’m daft but I feel like I’m lacking this life skill. I have mid length, relatively thick and a little wavy hair. I see women effortlessly twist their hair into a messy bun and I just have NO IDEA how to do it! I do struggle with coordination at the best of times! I’ve even looked at a few online tutorials but they still seem to move so fast I can’t follow!

Can anyone link to an easy guide?!

thank you MN!!!

Can you put it in a pony tail?

Blankspace4 · 27/08/2023 12:19

Yep!

Put it in a pony tail, then just grab the pony tail and wrap it around the bobble of the pony tail. Hold it and tie

1- ponytail
2-twist it continuously in one direction till it curls up on itself.
3- secure it with a band, the telephone cord style ones are very grippy.
4- when you let it down again it will be curly and bouncy - and a bugger to comb.

You're welcome.

You don’t have to be a girly girl to put your hair in a bun. By definition a bun is often used for the hardest, messiest and most active pursuits which don’t align with the “girly” headline.

I make a ponytail but I don’t put a hair tie in it. Instead of putting the tie in, I twist the whole thing, anti-clockwise, from the base to the tip until it coils, wrapping the long end around the bulk. Then the hair tie goes around the whole thing, twists and back over the whole thing again.

Also as a note - as a person with curly hair, if I used a telephone cord style hair tie the chances are I’d end up needing it cut out.

you might choose one of the big butterfly clips.

Fair enough about the telephone cord tie, my hair is slippery and falls down easily from a bun.

Also when driving I have to move it or I can't sit up straight in the car.

Thanks very much and also for not making me feel dumb! I’m actually a well read woman in my 30s with a good career but this one has passed me by for so long and I do tend towards the tomboy and therefore it’s easier to ask here then ask friends.

Few methods to try out - thank you!!

Good luck with the twisting ponytail method, it's the one i use. I find a scrunch works best at keeping my hair in place and still being able to get it out after

As a fellow not-good-at-hairstyles person I have concluded:

  1. So called messy buns often require more effort than I expected.
  1. I have to brush my hair immediately before I put it up if I don't want it to be all lumpy and not in a stylish way, just in an ugly way. Sometimes I then brush it with my whole head upside down to get all the hair where I want them for a bun.
  1. If brushing isn't an option I have to either do a low bun or turn my head upside down and sort of smooth everything out with one hand while I grab the hair in question with the other.
  1. A biggish scrunchie rather than a standard hair tie gives me more volume and makes the whole thing look more intentional (I don't have thick hair).

The outcome still isn't YouTube tutorial worthy but it's also not actively horrendous which frankly is my main aim.
