How much do you spend on clothes for yourself ?

I am always buying bits for the kids but never buy anything for myself and live in stuff that’s about five years old. I know everyone’s budgets vary a lot but how many items for example do you buy for YOU every whatever period ?

I don't have a set budget, nor follow any particular fashion- I buy what suits my shape. I mainly only buy something if the previous top/trousers have fallen apart, got paint/bleach on etc. Or will buy something when last years jumper/top doesn't fit or looks tired.

When I was thinner and worked in a corporate environment, I used to buy more clothes and more expensive things. I'm now a size 16/18, WFH and have no reason to buy lots of clothes.

I don't spend a lot on myself. I will buy stuff when I need it or if I see something I really like, but it's always from shops like Matalan or Primark. I don't really go out and buy myself something on impulse that's not relatively cheap. There's always something else that I need to be spending money on and the kids will always get clothes and stuff before me.

CoinsinaJar · 27/08/2023 12:06

Very little, but then I buy the large majority of my stuff from charity shops! (exceptions are underwear, and specific items related to my active hobby, which I get from specialist on-line retailers).

Having said that, I always look for better quality items and decent/designer labels so am happy with my wardrobe generally, and don't wear tatty or worn out clothes. Overall monthly spend would be in the region of £10-20 max including footwear.

Recent finds include a beautiful Jasper Conran jacket for £10 (a lot for me to spend on one item) and some Victoria Beckham Original jeans for £3.95.

No set budget. I don't buy loads but what I do buy are items that I really love and know that I will wear a lot. Probably £1k per year for a normal year on between 10 -12 items and underwear. Most will be replacements for tatty worn out items. Every five years or so I will buy/spend more as some things can start to look dated by then.

dontgobaconmyheart · 27/08/2023 13:31

I don't have a budget as such, I'm not consistently buying clothes monthly/seasonally.

I do a capsule wardrobe and tend to just replace something like for like if it's worn out or will add an item or two in a new season if I have a need for it - eg this summer I bought some sandals and a couple of tops, this winter I know I'll need a new coat and usually can't resist a new jumper but that's really it.

Because I'm not buying clothes constantly there's never any guilt associated. I just buy what I know I need and what I know I'll wear a lot. Most of it's in the mid price range or lower so certainly they aren't huge designer spends. If I do make a mistake and end uo not reaching for something I either make sure it goes back in the returns window or resell it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/08/2023 13:32

Little. Have always bought second hand and don’t need much.

TheYadaYada · 27/08/2023 13:34

I don't budget. I don't think I buy a lot of clothes, but will buy anything that I like.

I probably don't spend more than £200 a month.

PermanentTemporary · 27/08/2023 13:43

I spend a lot more than I think I do, if that makes sense. It's random - I'm used to buying from charity shops and still do sometimes, but I prefer a proper dress agency which is nearby, and now I have more money i have drifted into buying more standard clothes. I have had a lovely time buying things in Whistles and John Lewis, plus when I was a good stone lighter the odd thing from Anthropologie (extra extra large). I also spend quite a bit on sport/workout/hiking gear if you include trainers, and I like buying lingerie. It might average out at £200 a month?

JamiesTurkeyTwizzler · 27/08/2023 14:00

Roughly £50 a month. I will spend a bit more if I'm going on holiday or if I need new boots, bras or a coat as those items really are worth paying out more for but I try to stick to the sales for the more expensive items. I look in the sales at places like Fat Face and White stuff but I really rate Sainsburys TU and I like Costco Kirkland clothes which are great quality. I have a costco coat that's probably about 10 years old and still going strong but it's a bit tight now!

Batatahara · 27/08/2023 14:05

I don't have a specific budget. I go through phases which sort of feeds on itself in that then a batch of clothes wears out at the same time. E.g. all my socks suddenly have holes in them but then I did buy them all in a big batch 6 years ago

CuriousPorg · 27/08/2023 14:06

I tend not to spend anything until around this time of year and then buy £200 in one go to last me the winter at work. I never buy summer clothes as I hate the heat so hide inside and if I have to go out I have a few dresses about 20 years old that suffice.

Caspianberg · 27/08/2023 14:16

It varies. I don’t buy often, but if I do I tend to buy decent quality. But then no buy replacement for years, ie coats will be about £300, but I only buy one every few years max, and only if needed. Such as my long wool coat is about 10 years old, then bought ski coat about 7 years ago, then thin down coat about 3 years ago, and blazer last year. They are all still as new regardless of age so no plans of replacing any time soon unless they get damaged. It probably averages £600-1000 a year depending

MintJulia · 27/08/2023 14:21

I have a London job so need appropriate clothes one day a week. This summer I spent about £500.

For winter I need office shoes, 2xoffice tops, jeans, heavy sweater plus some underwear and trainers. £500ish I think.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 27/08/2023 14:23

Just getting set up with a new coat and a cardigan spent about £2k, but wont necessarily buy a anything significant for a while.

RidingMyBike · 27/08/2023 15:33

It used to be probably £200-£500 a year until a couple of years ago. Last year we were on a v tight budget so I just bought some replacement bras that I needed. This year I haven't bought any clothes for me yet as I'd like to lose weight but don't want to buy in current size.

Partly I haven't needed to replace other clothes - have enough smart stuff to keep me going for work and good quality coats/shoes to not need more in last couple of years. I prefer to buy fewer, more expensive items though. WFH more than 50% which means I wear jeans a lot more than I used to as well!

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 27/08/2023 15:36

I budget £70 per month but don't spend it every month. I tend to spend a few hundred twice a year.

lljkk · 27/08/2023 16:08

For about 15+ years I try to never buy me anything, and still I have too many clothes for my needs. I was given M&S vouchers : couldn't find enough in food hall so bought pants... I don't really need them either. I have inherited personalised items from DC (so not suitable for charity shop) that also stop my wardrobe from shrinking.

My last 2 big purchases for me were both about 10m ago: 1) a winter cycling jacket (£65?) after zip on old one died, 2) some winter boots, so I could stand comfortably outside for Xmas fairs, think they cost about £110.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 27/08/2023 16:16

Very little and even then it's from Vinted
I buy my favourite brands which I know fit and are good quality
Much better quality than the things in the shops now
I've bought 6 t shirts recently to refresh my collection on there
I only ever buy new jeans( very short legs!) and underwear
Approx £50 per season I'd say

BHRK · 01/09/2023 20:09

About £350 a month, it’s what I like to spend my displayable cash on

abbs1 · 01/09/2023 20:29

I've completed stopped buying new clothes apart from underwear and get it all off vinted for me and kids. Saving an absolute fortune and finding some great bargains. Brand new newlook top still with tags price of 24.99 in the shop got it for £2 plus postage. Found some really good quality stuff for the kids as well some also not worn or hardly worn.
