Ikea towels are they any good? Or other recs

Planning a trip to IKEA to get some stuff for DD at uni.

Towels are on the list, but I would actually also like some for myself and so would go more upmarket unless people tell me IKEA towels are the biz. I live very near TK Maxx so could also just go in there and get some. Thanks all

Many, many years ago, I had a Saturday job in one of those shops selling curtains/bedding/towels etc and we had it drummed into us that Christie did the best towels.

Firsttimecaller · 26/08/2023 11:29

IME Vagsjon are the best combination of lightweight (quick drying), natural (cotton), colour & size choice. We have a set of 50x100 & 100x150 in every colour and they are a very good price. Salviken are a bit rough and Himlean are too plush. But it depends on what you like.

Firsttimecaller · 26/08/2023 11:31

No edit button on the app but, no don't go expensive for a student - they'll get nicked, ruined in chaotic dyeing & laundry situations. Value for money wise my Vagsjon are 6 years old and still in excellent condition.

I'm quite a fan of Ikea towels, the budget thin ones. I now have quite a collection in white and cream/beige/fawn. I've never been a fan of the big fluffy jobs, and theirs are just right for me. They take up less room to store and wash & dry much more quickly than the big jobs.

BlueThursday · 26/08/2023 11:52

Bath mats I love from ikea they look as good as the day I bought them.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 26/08/2023 11:54

When parents have kids off to uni, I always think - give the kids your old, slightly worn stuff, it will be trashed/lost anyway. Buy the nice new stuff for yourself 😀

Yourebeingtooloud · 26/08/2023 11:56

They’re fine - we’ve got some that are probably at least 10 years old, not used all the time anymore but still perfectly serviceable. JL ones are my fave though.

APurpleSquirrel · 26/08/2023 11:56

We have some of the thick, fluffy ones & they're fab. Also recently bought some others from there for DS - he's finally outgrown the baby/kids towels. They were redirected stock from their Russian & Ukrainian stores & were reduced. But thinner than our others but great for kids/young adults.

Exactly this. The thinner Ikea towels wash and dry well and some of ours are years old and stilll going strong. I wouldn't go back to thick towels.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear – I’m going to IKEA to get stuff for DD but was going also to get myself some new towels as ours are on their very last legs (they’re not even fit to pass on to DD sadly). If John Lewis are better than IKEA then I’m happy to splash out more for myself, she can definitely have IKEA 😅

The nicest towels I have bought in recent times are Fox & Ivy ones from Tesco, surprisingly. Really thick and soft.
Christy are good, but a bit overpriced imo.

imed · 26/08/2023 12:18

Thick fluffy towels don't dry you probably imo.
We have Christy but only buy in the sales.

MardyMcBlowdry · 26/08/2023 12:20

I used some recently that were from The Range & I was so impressed that I'm planning to get some for myself.

BiddyPop · 26/08/2023 12:22

We have lots of ikea towels that have lasted well for up to 10 years now. A bath May as well, especially if shared bathrooms, would be worth adding too.

A socktopus for hanging socks and smalls to dry.

A few teatowels for the kitchen. (Even if catered, I presume there would be some form of kitchenette for coffee/snacks?). And a couple of mugs and maybe a couple of the plastic tubs to keep an open pack of crackers or biscuits crisp etc.

Do you have spare bedding to give them? If not, ikea have good sets that stand a teen trashing.

Check the office section for desk organisers etc.

A fleece blanket as spare bedding on cold nights or to curl up under when watching tv etc.

chesterlestreet · 26/08/2023 12:25

I have white company and primark luxury towels. Hard to tell apart without looking at the label

I remember heading off to uni may decades ago with Christie towels that Mum got me as being the best!

BiddyPop · 26/08/2023 12:25

The bath mat (not May!) is like a towel so can be thrown in the wash with them, but can be nice to keep your feet clean on floors that may not be quite so clean as home. But I'd advise it being kept in your room if you keep your towels there rather than left on the floor - we hang ours over the edge of the bath to dry and only have it on the floor when actually having a bath/shower and getting dried off after.

ditalini · 26/08/2023 12:27

Our Ikea towels are about 15 years old and have worn really well + kept their colour.

They're not fluffy which I love. Dry well and give you a satisfying scrub in the process.

We bought some emergency Morrisons ones on holiday a couple of summers ago in the same colour when we realised we'd forgotten to pack beach towels and the cottage ones were heavy, pristine white Christy* ones - the Morrison ones were a rubbish buy in comparison for probably a higher price.

(*Admittedly they were absolutely lush)

toottootpipip · 26/08/2023 14:27

Kings of cotton are my favourites and closest to hotel standard/size. We buy from there for our holiday let.

Enriquetta · 26/08/2023 18:11

Well mnetters were obviously reading this as by the time I got to IKEA all the vaksjon had gone. I’ve ended getting one Vinarn, which I think is posher. I might try it for myself and if I like it, I will keep it and get another one for DH and DD can get a cheapo version

We have two towels from IKEA that we bought in 1997 when we redecorated our first bathroom and they are still going strong-amazing really! DD tends to use them as she likes the colour but they don’t look worn at all.

HazelBite · 26/08/2023 18:20

My best towels are from the Extra Special range at ASDA, I have Christy towels and they are superior to them,

CoffeeBeansGalore · 26/08/2023 18:22

Asda towels. Wash & dry well. Last for years. Available on line as well as in store.

It was drummed into me by various female relatives that Christy is the best. However, I find that Sheridan are better than Christy. And if you want to spend a lot, Alexandre Turpault are very good.

alltoomuchrightnow · 26/08/2023 18:37

I work in bathshop IKEA and spend my entire life folding towels ! ;)
Fredrikson in my view best quality, but not a bargain, should last and last though
Me personally.. I have all Vallasan and Vagson as they dry so quickly and I like them for hair as I hate having heavy towel wrapped on head
Himlean shed forever !
Personally I hate fluffy towels, and the ones I use give some nice friction as well as quick dry
