Rome as a solo female traveller

I’d like to go to a sporting event being held in Rome next year, I don’t know anyone interested in the event that would also be able to or afford to come. I don’t have loads of leave to use so would literally be going for 2 days to watch the event, so can’t really invite a friend for sightseeing!

I’m not “shy” about travelling alone, haven’t been to Rome since I was in school (around the time of the Tudors), but have lived in a rough corner of South London and a particularly notorious part of Manchester in my 20s, so probably more streetwise than the average person…
Will it be ok?!

I go about once a year. Never had any issues but I am fairly street savvy & do a lot of research before I go as I usually stay in a fairy cheap hotel on the outskirts.

Thank you, would you be able to advise of a few areas worth looking into?

I live in Italy (not Rome, further south but go to Rome quite a lot) and have never felt unsafe. Or not anymore so than I would in any big city.
Don't advertise you're a tourist (by clutching a bag pack to your front or wearing a bum bag or anything) and don't stay near Termini station.

And enjoy!

Near the Vatican is where I stay. Good transport links, plus you can walk into the centre through some nice areas. I stayed at the Best Western there last time.

I was there by myself the same weekend as a big rugby international (last Feb? I think?). I stayed on the Via Veneto, wandered around by myself looking at art, and felt perfectly safe — certainly as much as I would in London or Paris.

Take the same basic safety precautions you would in any big city.

As someone else posted, if you have street sense you will be ok, just like any major city, people/areas to avoid, dodgy sellers and no go areas.

If you're hitting tourist spots then just sticking by the main network and widely publicised 'off the beaten track' is ok as you can spot those looking out for tourists.

It's the same as any major city, but as far as things to be concerned about, Rome is a huge visitor friendly commercial city that you just apply the same standards as if you are going to london

I went with dd when she was 18. Felt perfectly safe for a sensible woman traveller. Agree re not staying near the station though.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/08/2023 00:52

I've done it several times. Felt safe than in London.

It's totally fine. I have been traveling to Rome as a lone female since I was 11. Just watch out for pickpockets....there are zillions of them in Rome. More than other big cities in my experience. Don't bring anything valuable like fancy jewelry or cameras and make sure your mobile is backed up to the cloud. And always keep your luggage to hand.

As someone else said, staying near the Vatican is good. It will be cheaper than in the center, but still nice and walkable to everything. Buy tickets in advance for the Sistine Chapel. If you can get a reservation for the Vatican Underground, snap those up. And I read somewhere that you now have to buy tickets to visit the Pantheon.

I never travel alone. But while in Rome dh and ds left me to attend a sporting event far down South so l spent two days there alone. I had no issue. It was just lovely. I did the open top bus tour popping on and off regularly and l never felt uncomfortable.
