I'm going to prune an enormous Rose Bush soon. Its smothered in hips. What can I do with them (apart from leave some for the birds & bees obviously)

Rosehip syrup! Delicious and easy to make

Hi, can you use any rose hips? I've noticed the wild roses have the biggest, red hips. Are they best to use?

Rosehip and crabapple jelly is lovely. Keep an eye out for a crabapple tree - they're suprisingly common.

Rosehip oil is fab for your skin - it's really expensive to buy, but you can make buckets of it very cheaply using a non-comodegenic oil like almond oil as a base. Great as an overnight oil, make-up cleanser, or a base for a bath oil with some essential oils added.

I love rosehip syrup, it is so nice on ice cream and pancakes. Excellent Christmas gift too.

Make some rosehip jam then send it to me please 😛

Ah, now I remember being given (store bought) rosehip syrup as a child. I shall look up some recipes 😋

Rosehips are generally better after the first frost - though this is getting later and later by the year! But they are better harvested once they are older and started to soften, as oppsoed to new and shiny and plump.

@rbe78 thank you - I can wait a bit. First frost in Scotland probably earlier too.

I made some rosehip wine once and it was good, but it was at my parents and the kit went when they sold the house. It was surprisingly easy.

as kids, we used them as 'itching powder', splitting them open and putting the hairy seeds down people's backs.

Itching powder 🤣
