Is this nits??

Me and my son moved to a new property about 8 weeks ago. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what they think is going on because I'm pretty anxious right now.

Basically I have been itching pretty much since the move. I wondered if my son had picked up nits from school but he said his head wasn't itching and I've never been able to find anything on his head. I regularly use tea tree and do a twice weekly comb through of his hair as a prevention and he's never had nits. I don't do that with my own hair..

Anyway a few weeks into the move I'm suddenly feeling itchy. I put it down to nerves and anxiety. Decided just to be on the safe side to do the regular nit comb on me that week and thought no more of it. I went to a number of pharmacies just to check re scabies, none of them thought I had it.

Then one night last week my scalp was very itchy, as it was mainly the scalp I covered my head in conditioner and have been doing so every night, leaving it on and combing out in the shower every morning. My head is no longer itchy, but then I was getting body itches (despite showering daily). Always worse at night and then I would see tiny black flecks or specks on my skin. I figured it was evidence of lice, so have treated my whole body to neem soap, moisturiser and have taken our bedding, all of it, and clothes that we've worn, daily, to the launderette as we don't have a dryer here and I wanted to get them washed and then dried on a very high heat (I've now read that's not necessary for head lice, but with my body itching, I'm so grossed out and just want it all to stop).

Meanwhile my son, still no problems, no itching, he's fine.

A pharmacist told me the best thing is to use permethrin or malathion but unfortunately neither of these are available. He said to continue my regime as my itching has lessened a lot over the last few days and so far my son unaffected.

This morning I woke up and there were a few black specs in the bed but no where near like the last couple of days. Unfortunately there was like a rusty brown few marks on the pillow. Sorry to be gross but I'm so anxious about this as because I've moved I fear bed bugs. It's probably irrational but it's how I am. I know they leave a 'blood' type mark if you lie on them during the night. There has been no other evidence of bed bugs and neither of us have bites. So I looked to see what else this could be and I'm a little ashamed to say that I was working late last night and found some dark chocolate in my desk drawer and in my shattered and dopey state by then, ate a square of it and fell into bed in the early hours. I'm working a second job which is admin from home, so with that and the move, just stressed and that's bad I know, but that's kind of an explanation. Wondering if I did drool in my sleep and cause those marks.

I know I'm not going to know. I'm just about to head off to the launderette anyway as I'm going to keep up this routine for a few more days. If it's blood it will stain won't it? And if it's saliva / chocolate (sorry!) it should come out?

Sorry for the essay I'm just feeling so grossed out and ocd about it all now and I don't want anything like that getting near my son :-( We've never had anything like this, or lice. I'm hoping it's lice now because bed bugs would even more disgusting. I read on here last night that Hedrin doesn't contain chemicals, I didn't know that, having pharmacists telling me there's no product but hopefully there is that one and I can treat myself and son and then see how things go. Can children 'carry' these things sometimes and give to someone else but not be affected themselves? I know I should be clued up on all this but I'm not, sorry, I just thought it would be a lot easier, would appear on son and that I could go to a pharmacy and get sorted out but it's been way more complicated than that.

Thanks for any advice.

Tbh it doesn’t sound like nits or fleas, are you the only person getting itchy?

SquirrelFeeder · 28/08/2023 03:01

Buy some Indorex spray and spray everything. It contains Permethrin so will kill anything bug-like. You may need to buy a few cans but spray mattress, carpets, everything and then wash bedsheets on the hottest wash setting with some disinfectant in with the detergent.

@TopazQuartz if it’s head lice you need to get a Nitty Gritty comb if you haven’t already. No need to leave the conditioner on for hours, section your hair and slather loads on, then comb through with the Nitty Gritty. After each comb wipe it on white tissue / kitchen roll and inspect. Keep going until every inch of your head has been combed thoroughly.

A normal comb will not cut it. Vamousse treatment is also very good.

Some people are allergic to head lice bites and react more extremely than others. Treat your child as well even if you can’t see anything on their head, some hair colours hide nits very well and some people don’t itch at all with them.

Can you tell I’ve dealt with this a lot?! 😭

First of all where did I say it?

Next, I'm in a country that allows free speech so I find it offensive that you are asking me not to say something (if I said it) that I feel. But I deal with that by moving on, not by trying to control others. What right do you have to tell others what they can and can't feel and then tell them they cannot say how they feel.

You are splitting hairs and I have no more time to respond to you, but if you want to quote me, where I said whatever it was that you allowed yourself to be offended by, I will look at that and respond one more time (probably to say I have every right to describe how I feel the way I want and that how it makes you feel is not my issue or concern as long as I'm not being abusive, it's your concern to deal with, without trying to control others).

My head is itchy again today, so I think this is going to turn out to be head lice, but black specks, no idea.

I keep hearing about this Nitty Gritty comb, it is better than all the others? :-D Part of the problem is I've been doing the combing in the shower because I don't have a mirror in the bathroom yet to stand and do it. But I'll turn the shower off and grab tissue to try and see what I'm doing 🙄😁

I used to hate things like this, always going for the natural stuff, the peppermint, the neem, etc. But I've never had anything like this before and ........ I want this spray. Anything bug like is currently not welcome.

Only me. DS says he isn't itchy but he has scratched a couple of times but he says he is only doing it like he always does and I'm noticing because I am looking for bugs :-D I can't see anything in his hair.

Atm, I have a really itchy head so I'm going to go with the theory of it being headlice for now. I just freaked myself out thinking there were bed bugs in the new house but there's no evidence of that.

OP are you actually using proper head lice stuff? Get some decent stuff off Amazon and completely cover your head (and your son's head), leave it on overnight. Next morning, use the comb that comes with the lice shampoo and stand over a sink, get the comb right behind your ears (where they tend to live) and comb out into a sink with hot water. You don't need a mirror. Then repeat a couple of days later. My child has caught lice so much, ignore them when they tell you that they don't itch, they don't always notice the itching. You have to be ruthless and determined with these buggers..don't use tea tree oil....

Sotired22 · 28/08/2023 13:14

It sounds like it’s probably head lice OP but I don’t think your method will be doing much to clear them. Nitty Gritty comb is essential and some decent treatment too ideally. Repeat after a week. Treat your son too.

In your OP. It's a free country so I'll freely point out ignorance and immorality.

Are you feeling schizophrenic or bipolar too?

NiceUnusualDifferent · 28/08/2023 16:14

If you've just moved house it could be bed bugs that were already present in the new house?

whereismysleep · 28/08/2023 17:03

If you're using a nit comb on your hair thoroughly (any brand, doesn't have to be nitty gritty) and you don't see lice on the comb, it's not nits!

Adult lice are a few millimetres long and clearly lice. Small ones are also clearly lice if you look closely.

ilovebagpuss · 28/08/2023 17:07

Fleas would be bites on lower legs and maybe trunk.
Bed bites usually on trunk and clearly bites red spots.
The black bits you keep mentioning could be just speck of scabby blood from your hair if you are itching it raw.
The head lice itch is primarily head and neck and you say you have found a head louse.
When I had them the heas itch was insane! Only repeated Hedrin mousse treatment for a few weeks killed them. Also never assume the others in your house will be nit free we found them on us all in the end.
Just treat yourself and son weekly for a month.

MarshaArt · 28/08/2023 17:30

Nitty Gritty / Nit Combs have very fine teeth so they essentially fit only your hair through the teeth and any lice or eggs are forcibly scraped off the hair. The conditioner is useful as it both smothers the lice and helps the comb slide through. You do it consistently over a period of time and both eggs and lice are removed at all stages of the life cycle.

You don’t need to be in the shower. Slather your hair with conditioner. Stand in front of the mirror and section your hair and comb through each section. Wipe the comb off on kitchen towel. You will see whether there are any lice or eggs on the paper. It’s pretty obvious when there are, especially if it’s been going on a while.

Mortimermay · 28/08/2023 17:41

Having recently had to deal with head lice, I would be surprised if you hadn't seen any by now if they're there with the amount of combing and checking you're doing. As others have said if you comb it through and wipe the comb on a piece of white kitchen towel or similar you should clearly see the lice moving or small eggs. They're actually pretty easy to see on a paper towel.

MarshaArt · 28/08/2023 18:11

Yes, agree. Although until we actually had them I would wonder if I was a bit itchy and saw a black fleck. And then when we actually got them I was like OH, THAT’S HEADLICE!
